Thrift Shop

I’m gonna pop some tags, only got twenty dollars in my pocket…(from the song, Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis).

When my two step-kids were still living at home, they were pretty easy when it came to clothes shopping.  Sure, they had certain likes and dislikes like everyone else, but they never really made a big deal about sporting the latest and greatest name brands on their backs.

As a matter of fact, when they each entered high school (they are two years…

Case of the Sneaky Spinach

The dilemma is probably as old as motherhood itself.  How DO you get your kids to eat their vegetables?  When I was a kid, I remember hating a LOT of things my mom put on my plate:  beets, apple sauce, mustard, spinach, radishes (still not a fan – sorry Mom) and a bunch of other things.  I always felt like they were on my plate to punish me for something I had done wrong.

As years went by, my taste buds matured and I developed a liking for everything on this list – except for…

Planet PVC

Oh how we love our plastic!  Nothing has shaped the modern world quite like it.  And it’s virtually everywhere you look:  vinyl flooring, electrical conduit, fencing, water pipes, windows, shower curtains, decking and wallpaper.

Polyvinyl chloride is one of those materials used for its durability and cost effectiveness.  It’s also very low maintenance and can be made softer and more bendable.  PVC is now a popular choice for outdoor furniture, upholstery and even clothing.

But…

Heart Healthy, Kid Friendly Chicken Recipe

One of the challenges I have faced in my journey to be green, healthy and fit is in the area of cooking.  If you have read my posts before, you know about my aversion to cooking.  It’s one of those necessary evils I suppose, even though I am what you might call “kitchen challenged”.  Don’t like cooking or baking, but I can clean like a champ!

My husband is, quite fortunately for me, the kind of guy who will eat pretty much whatever I put in front of him.  Even if he doesn’t like it so…

Friday Favorites for March 8th

I’ve written a few times about the progress I’ve made in my journey to go green.  While I certainly have a long way to go, I’m not the big-haired, wasteful consumer that I used to be.  And since we all struggle in our journey to do better and be better, I’m continuing my weekly entry of “favorites” that help me day to day.

Mini Trampoline

Honestly, I have never even considered buying a trampoline for my kids.  OK, maybe I did.  But only for about 5 seconds.  I have heard…

Beating the Winter Blues

I have lived most of my life in the Chicagoland area but, even before that, I lived in Pennsylvania.  Point?  I’m used to cold winters!  Doesn’t mean that I necessarily like them much, but I have learned to embrace them.

As I’ve gotten older (and colder) I’ve had my share of the Winter Blues.  They usually…

Hollywood Goes Green

Leave it to Hollywood to have its finger on the pulse of what’s popular in America.  Usually, if there is a new “movement”, celebs jump right on the bandwagon because they know it will keep them popular and relevant.  So, I decided to do a little research to see if there were any Hollywood types who really took…

Are Cell Phones Making Your Child Sick?

Cell phones have become a way of life and more and more I see them in the hands of youngsters.  Many families no longer have a house phone (mine included) because everyone is reachable via cell.  Have you ever seen that commercial where everyone is fighting over the minutes in the data plan?  It goes something like…

Fussy About Fruit

I know that my son gets plenty of vitamins because he takes a fantastic supplement and I “hide” vegetables and fruits in just about everything (might have to do a post about that).  But when it comes to eating fruits and vegetables in their natural state, it’s all about the “dip”.

He doesn’t like apple slices unless there is peanut butter involved.  Forget about carrots if there is no ranch dressing.  Salad?  Better have some raspberry vinaigrette.  I should be glad, I know but I…

Friday Favorites for March 1st

Last week, I started a new blog segment that I refer to as my Friday Favorites.  These are things that I have discovered over the past couple of years.  Who knows what you might find here?  It could be a food, an appliance, or even a destination.  But each item, in its own way, contributes to the awesomeness otherwise known as my green lifestyle.  So without further ado, here are this week’s Friday Favorites:

“Cause” It Tastes Great!

Have any of you ever heard of Project…

Don't Touch Me!!

I have never, nor do I anticipate ever being, a touchy-feely kind of person.  You know how some people will greet you with a hug, or a kiss or want to touch you when they talk to you?  That is SO not me.  In fact, those types of people make me really uncomfortable and want to run in the other direction.

It’s not that I’m not affectionate or anything.  I still kiss my son (who is almost 14) on the forehead every night and I’m delighted that he wants to give me an occasional…

Nifty Niacin - It's Not Just a Word on Your Cereal Box!

If you would have asked me a few years ago what niacin was, I would have likely said it was one of those funny sounding vitamins that I used to read on the side of the cereal box in the morning.  And it is.  But it was only recently that I realized just how important this little gem of a vitamin really…

Green on the Cheap

When I made the decision, really made the decision, to adopt a greener lifestyle, I had people say to me “I’d love to go green but I can’t afford it.”  Have you ever said that?  Thought that?  If so, I will refrain from telling you what I said in return.

The point is that if you think about it,…

Winter Wonderland

Every New Year, thousands of people (if not more) make the resolution to get fit.  They sign up for gym memberships, buy workout DVD’s, and order the latest and greatest gadget from a slick infomercial on TV.  And usually about this time of year, several weeks in, a large majority of these same people let the…

My Friday Favorites

It’s no secret that my journey to be green is a work in progress.  Every day, I’m learning something new about health, fitness and the environment.  Along the way, I have made many discoveries that have helped me on this journey.  So today I am starting a weekly post that I will call Friday Favorites.  I am not trying to “sell” any of these items – these are just things that help me to be a little healthier, a little more fit, and a little greener every day.  Enjoy!…

Oh, How I Hate to Cook!

I have a confession to make.  Cooking is not one of my favorite things to do.  In fact, I really kind of hate it.  OK, maybe hate is a bit strong.  I mean, it’s not as bad as scrubbing the shower floor or putting clean sheets back on the beds (raise your hand if you hate dealing with fitted sheets).  But those…

Why Sleep Can Be Your Waistline's Best Friend

One of the top New Year’s Resolutions has to be along the lines of losing weight, getting fit and eating healthier.  We make these resolutions with the very best of intentions but then life gets in the way.  Our bosses need us to stay late at the office.  The kids get sick.  We stress about gathering our tax…

The Heart Attack That Almost Was

I started this blog several weeks ago to talk to other moms about my journey to become green.  My hope was to share information and maybe inspire others.  Being healthy, taking care of the planet and giving back are all very important to me and that’s why I typically post on my blog daily.

On a normal day, I am up at 5:45 AM.  By 8:30 AM, I have gotten my son up, made sure he was ready for the day, cooked him breakfast and driven him to school.  The beds are made, sinks and toilets…

Eco-Friendly Luxury

When most people think about staying in a nice hotel, eco-friendly doesn’t exactly come to mind.  Think about all the people taking hot showers, running the air conditioning in their rooms, and watching TV, not to mention washing all the towels and bedding.  It’s mind boggling to think about how much energy is being used.  But, believe it or not, there are hotels that not only care about offering comfortable amenities and convenience to their guests, but care about our planet as…

Love That Lunch Duty

When I was working in our local school district, I had “lunch duty” each day.  Basically that meant helping the other two teachers make sure the kids each:

a.  had a lunch

b.  ate that lunch

c.  kept their “inside voices”

d. kept their hands to themselves; and

e. (my least…
