Help Thy Neighbor

Occasionally, there is such a thing as being too helpful.

A while back, I had a wonderful friend and neighbor. Mrs. Neighbor lived with Mr. Husband in a house that was always full of teenagers (some of them were even hers). Well, one weekend, Mr. Husband took the teenagers on a camping trip and left Mrs. Neighbor with the house completely to herself. This had never happened before. There was much rejoicing on the part of Mrs. Neighbor, but secretly I was was worried about her… Continue

Attitude Adjustment

I have been thinking a lot lately about the impact attitude can have on a person's life.

There was a time for me when everything was pretty... chaotic, to say the least. It seemed like every time I turned around, something bad was happening. I had health issues that put me in the hospital. Someone broke into my car. My cat ran away. I was in a car wreck. Someone pulled a gun on me while I was at work (ever have to go around booting people's cars to pay the bills? Not. Fun.) The house… Continue

Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving is over, and in the aftermath of turkey and family my head is full of jumbled thoughts and half-formed posts. I’m running on little sleep and too much coffee, but I wanted to get something written while I have access to a computer and my sister has the boy occupied.

It has been a wonderful holiday, one of the best I can remember. My brother and his fiance drove down from Seattle, and having our family together in one place was something we were all grateful for. The… Continue

Chances, Dreams, and Final Rounds

The second round of the Sam-e Good Mood Blogger contest is here. As in, final round. As in, holy crap, I might actually have a shot at this thing. As in, have you voted yet?

If I get the job, I will write five posts a week on maintaining a good mood and staying positive. Something I can completely handle, because I rock, and haven't you heard? I am a ball of sunshine. In exchange, I will get a brand new laptop to keep… Continue

At the End of the Rainbow: A Breastfeeding Story

When I was pregnant, there were so many things I was looking forward to. I remember holding my hands on my stomach, trying to touch the mystery that was my baby moving inside me. I couldn't wait to see what he looked like, or breathe in his new baby smell. I couldn't wait until I could hold him in my arms, touch his skin. I wanted to hear his cries and be there to comfort him.

Of all the things I was looking forward to, I can easily say that breastfeeding was not one of… Continue

Halloween Tails

Despite all of us feeling a bit under the weather, we got J all dressed up to go trickin’ and treatin’. The package claimed this was a horse costume, but I beg to differ. That, my friends, is a mini-cow if I’ve ever seen one. (Let me remind you that I live in Montana, so yes, I have actually seen one.) (Click here for a ridiculous amount of cuteness.)

National Blog Posting Month

Oh, sweet blog, I have neglected you the last couple weeks. I’m sorry, there will be flowers and candy to make up for it.

I blame the fact that the boy and I have been either sick or out of town every day for the last three weeks. Add that to my obsessive campaigning in order to get the Sam-e blogging gig, lack of agreeable computer, and the craziness of life in general… well, you get it. This blog has been… Continue

Between the Headlines: Cosleeping is Not to Blame

Yesterday, a case-control study looking at SIDS risk factors was published on BMJ. Since then, news stories have sprang up across the US with headlines like "WARNING: Co-sleeping With Your Infant Can Kill Them" and "Over Half of Cot Deaths Linked to Cosleeping." These headlines are meant to grab your attention--and scare the living fire out of you. (They worked, didn't they?) However, once you take a closer look, you'll see that these news articles not only are misrepresenting the findings (big… Continue

Cast Your Vote, and Help Me Out!

Sam-e is having a talent search for the perfect person to blog about ways to maintain a good mood, naturally, and I think I'm just the person they are looking for! After all, when I took their mood quiz, it told me

You are like the Sun – Like the sun above, people who fall into the Sun category generally feel uplifted and full of energy. It’s completely normal for you to have the occasional “overcast” day, but you deal with your emotions in a positive way by staying active, eating… Continue

Mom Banned From School for Breastfeeding

One of the posts today on the babywearer forum really upset me, and I wanted to share it with you as an example of why we need further education about breastfeeding (and also to make sure that word gets around about this principal’s actions). This was posted by one of the babywearer members in response to what happened to a local mom:

Coming out of the Cosleeping Closet

That’s right: I cosleep with my baby. It is not something I do because I’m too lazy or inept to make him sleep on his own, or because I have some unhealthy need to make him overly dependent on me, or because I am simply too stupid to know better. It was not a “bad habit” that we formed. It is a conscious decision that I made based on research and what felt right for us.

This is a topic that has come up a lot for me recently. There’s been discussions with fellow co-sleepers about… Continue

My Baby Can Beat Up Your Baby (and Other Ridiculous Comparisons)

Standing in line at the bank today, I got asked the question I have come to dread: "So, is he walking yet?"After responding with the same defensive "No--but he's really close!" that I have been saying for over two months now, she launches into this big story about how her niece is only nine months old and already walking. She says it like she just composed her first symphony or something. "That's nice," I tell her. What I'm thinking is, "I bet she's an ugly baby."

My son is smart,… Continue

Signing Babies Rock

In my humble (somewhat biased opinion), there isn’t anything cuter than a signing baby. Especially when that baby is mine.

This morning, I woke up to baby kisses and J’s sweet voice saying “Mama, mama, maaaaa.” I open my eyes and he immediately signs “diaper” at me with this huge grin like he’s just accomplished something major (which, I found out, he had). Diaper changed, teeth brushed, we sit down to breakfast, but J isn’t eating. He keeps signing all done at me (while yelling “all… Continue

Happy Birthday, Baby!

One year ago today, my little miracle landed in my life.

Literally, landed. After hours of back labor and doctor drama (a story in itself), Jayden Eli surprised everyone by arriving in a rush and landing on the hospital floor. The nurse had just enough time to put her hand under his head, but the rest of him met the ground with an audible splat. How was it the doctor put on the chart? Oh yes, “arrived precipitously on the hospital floor.” He was immediately nicknamed Crash.…
