When my sixteen-year-old son begged to return to Cancun for a family vacation, I was not too thrilled. Cancun was the last place I wanted to go. We had already been to the same resort twice before. Finally, my son mentioned practicing his Spanish and doing an extra credit report for his level three Spanish class for the 2011-201 school year. Off to Cancun we went. The first night at the…

I do not like spending too much time wallowing in things I have zero control over. Today I found myself knee deep in thoughts about a topic that sends chills up and down my spine. It is not my favorite topic, but after reading Carolyn Meyer’s book White Lilacs and an article about Darrel Brown, I felt compelled to write about my least favorite topic: Racism.
Reading Meyer’s book and the article about Darrel Brown forced me to think about my own experiences with racism. I…

I first met Ella through the mom bloggers club. Her willingness to help provide free books to young readers touched me hugely. I was so impressed with her good samaritan ways I wanted to find out as much as possible about her. My intent is to help Ella get some exposure so parents can find out about what services she makes available. I proudly present to you today, Ella Johnson.
Can you tell the readers about yourself?
I was born in England. I…

I love reading and reviewing children’s picture books. I think it is so important to expose all children to reading at an early age. After having read so many books, one thing that stands out is the lack of books with children of color. This is what propelled me to self-publish my first children’s book: Marie and Her Friend the Sea Turtle. This topic got me interested in interviewing authors of color. My desire is to help promote them and the contribution they are making to the…

Have you ever wondered what life is like in Cuba? Cuban author Teresa Dovalpage’s firsthand account of growing up in that country was chronicled in Habanera, A Portrait of a Cuban Family. I recently read and reviewed in Blogcritics Teresa’s book, and I wanted to find out more about the author of this intriguing book. And, though her book details a tremendous amount of truths about life in Cuba, I also had many unanswered…

Let's face it, I teach fulltime and at the same time working very hard to promote myself as a children's author. I simply had to share this great diet ,I could not keep that information to myself.
