Friday was JDubbs's and my fourth wedding anniversary. We didn't do anything elaborate, but when you have two kids under three and the younger littlin' just got three teeth at the same time (including one molar), getting out to dinner a mile and a half away is a blessing and as much a present as we could ask for.
I didn't bring my camera. We…Continue

Parenthood is a balancing act; that cliche is almost too easy. Yes, there are many balls in the air and sometimes one slips through and crashes to the ground. But, to keep the metaphor going, doesn't it always come bouncing back? If one day I just don't have my act together and maybe my kids watch a little more TV than usual, doesn't it always work out that the next day we never turn it on and spend the afternoon taking a nature walk or stumbling upon a used…Continue

I teased you Saturday with a hint of how we usually spend our Father's Day weekends. It's not everyday that the skies fill with colorful conveyances and our…Continue

As my kids grow older, I'm becoming a sucker for anything that measures how little they are at this stage in their lives. I love crafts that use their finger or handprints, like here and here. I have their infant footprints framed in my bedroom. I imagine that twenty years from now I will cherish all things that…Continue

Even before I moved to Vermont, I became familiar with Simon Pearce glassware and its reputation for elegant and yet everyday glassware. We are lucky enough to have some Simon Pearce pieces ourselves: champagne glasses that we got as an engagement gift,…Continue

How is it that we went to a double birthday party this week and I felt like I left with a gift?

I thought it was supposed to be April showers that bring May flowers? So why is May so showery this year? This week has been one giant sprinkling, keeping the ground just a little too wet to sit on and the air just a little too chilly to go out without jackets. Really, Springtime? Aren't you supposed to be in full effect by now?
So we've been doing a lot of indoor play lately, and Em is…

I had big plans to make the decorations for Em's Easter birthday party. They were all crafts that came from toilet paper or paper towel rolls, and I thought they would be an easy touch to her party, something homemade by her brother and me. But as the date approached and I had more and more things on my plate, the crafts were pushed to the wayside. It was all well and good because her party was beautiful just the way it was, with…Continue

My Mother's Day this year was really wonderful, from beginning to end. Even when I decided I would do the anti-Mother's Day thing and force my husband to join me in cleaning our downstairs from top to bottom at 8:30 at night; isn't Mother's Day all about not cleaning? Well, since I never clean, I guess I just thought Mother's Day must be about Opposites Day or something. JDubbs was a good sport about it, though, even if it was…

Happy Mother's Day to all you deserving mamas out there! My husband is dutifully playing with Em, who is refusing to nap, so that I can get some uninterrupted blogging and photo editing time in before we head to the in-laws' for dinner. We have had a wonderful day so far. Before the new week begins, I wanted to be sure to give you a crafty idea that has been a blessing for me this week. So here is a Mother's Day…

Easter has come and gone and after a wonderful celebration with family and friends, I am left storing my baby chicks and tucking away my Easter books until next year. But what about those stupid plastic eggs?
As far as I…

Being a parent in the Upper Valley requires me to think outside the typical activities box. There are certainly several places to take my kids on a potentially daily, weekly, or monthly basis, but everyone knows about those places: Billings Farm, VINS, the Montshire Museum, the train exhibit at Quechee Gorge Museum. Those places are packed during school vacation and on the weekends, and are at times expensive to frequent. To truly take full advantage of…
