Disclaimer:  I consider myself a writer who takes photographs, not a photographer who writes.  I have no particular insight or expertise regarding photography other than what I have learned through trial and error or from online tutorials.

Disclaimers aside, I am really digging a particular preset in my Adobe Lightroom photo editing software.  I really have not dabbled in the world of presets…

Self-Portrait

Paper Heart Camera is having a self-portrait challenge this week.  I dismissed it as not up my alley because self-portraits give me double chins and I never have any make-up or anything on, so it would just be a close-up of nothing great.  Plus it has to be in the kitchen and God knows I never do anything worth documenting in there.  But my photographic lucky streak continued (coincidental…

Joy of Luck #7: My Rainbows

Today is the last Joy of Luck assignment, and it ends on a high note.  We are to consider (and photograph) our own personal rainbow, in a metaphorical sense.  What will bring me luck in the future?  What blessings do I have to look forward to?  That one was pretty easy for me, since my family is such a blessing and I can only consider myself lucky for having the people and babies in my life that I…

Defunkifying

We're in a funky stage right now, by which I mean "a stage which puts me in a funk."  The kids are oblivious and happy, but I am less than enamored with their current conditions.  Jax has decided that the art of listening is not high on his priority list and has deemed myself, his gymnastics instructor, his music teacher, and any other adult who tries to corral him into a polite or sedentary state as irrelevant.  No need to listen to them; they're irrelevant. …

Sugaring

This weekend I was initiated into Vermonterhood.  I did something that every true blue Vermonter considers just another day, yet I had never done it before.  Our family, plus Nana and Papa and some friends of theirs, went to a sugar house and tried some fresh maple syrup, literally fresh out of the tap.

A Simple Spring Celebration

Yesterday was the first day of spring!  Hooray!  Are you ready to celebrate spring with your children?  I know I am, even though it is snowing as we speak (another 4" or so...oh, bother).  But snowstorm or no, it is officially spring and that deserves a celebration!  And what better why to celebrate than with a craft?  Well, a party would be fun, too, but we're fresh out of cupcakes.  This craft took about 15 minutes and it only required materials I'm sure you…

Defrosting

We're defrosting up here in the extreme northeast.  Up here in the boondocks.  We are quickly approaching the fifth season of the year.  Oh?  You thought there were only four seasons?  Oh, right.  You must live somewhere other than Vermont.  I use to think there was only four, too.

Welcome to Mud Season.

Snow Day

Follow my blog "Rub Some Dirt On It" at http://vermontwhitneys.blogspot.com

Monday was an unexpected snow day.  After a weekend of rain and temperatures reminiscent of spring, winter came back to rear its very ugly head.  So ugly it destroyed our grill with one gigantic piece of ice leaping off the roof onto our deck.  (Must have done something to do deserve that kind of karma, Grillmaster…
