Cortney Galster's Blog – December 2012 Archive (23)

Christmas Was Awesome. But it Left My House a Total Mess.

I can’t believe that tomorrow is New Year’s Eve. It literally seems like it was just weeks ago that we brought in 2012. The year went by so fast and life changed in the blink of an eye. It went by so fast, in fact, that I don’t even have any resolutions for the New Year – other than to just enjoy life as it comes!

We’re still recovering from Christmas. If you could see what my house looks like right now, you would probably be…

WAHM: Curating an Audience for Your Blog

Obviously, I’m a blogger. Writing is more than just a place to express myself: it’s how I relax throughout the crazy that tends to be my daily life. Since I’ve been blogging for so long {since 2007, if you really wanted to know}, I have extensive experience in creating a blogging “audience”, if you will. If you’re just starting out – or even if you’ve been blogging for a long time – you might feel overwhelmed at the prospect of cultivating a strong blog…

Merry Day After Christmas!

The past few days made up my baby’s first Christmas – and I honestly can’t believe that they’re already over! Between all of the shopping and preparing and visiting and hosting, Christmas certainly went by in a blur. I really enjoyed the past five days. But I’m also a little sad that our first holiday season with our first little one is coming to a close.

But with that being said, our first Christmas with RJ certainly was a…

Super Mom to the Rescue. Even on Saturdays.

Days like today make me feel like super mom. And it’s not even eight am yet.

I was up early with the little man – who was hungry well before six am but not ready to actually wake up. So instead of opening his eyes at all he just screamed while I prepared a bottle for him. I tried to give him some oatmeal – which is usually what he has for his first meal of the day – and he screamed some more. Apparently he really didn’t want to…

A Sticky Situation: Learning to Change a Baby Diaper and Staying Dry at the Same Time

When RJ was first born, I can honestly say that I was a pretty prepared mama. I had his clothes washed and put away long before we went to the hospital, knew exactly how to prepare his bottles and was totally stocked up on diapers and wipes for the little guy. I even had all of his teeny tiny crib shoes neatly displayed on a shelf in his closet! But there was one sticky situation that I wasn’t prepared for: changing my baby boy’s diaper. Sure, I’ve changed tons of diapers before. But…

Keeping Life Organized as a New Mom

Here’s the thing: when you have a baby, there are a lot of things that change in your lifestyle no matter who you are. You’re crazy busy as you adjust to having a new little person in your life who requires constant care and attention. You’re sleep deprived and learning how to cope with doing normal things – like laundry – when all you want to do is spend time with your new little addition. But slowly, you adapt. You learn to…

Life With a Newborn is Always Interesting. Especially When Giant Snowstorms Are in the Mix.

Ohhh it’s been an interesting morning here at the Galster household. Although I have to say that we’re all cuddled up in our cozy little home since it’s snow city outside – and I love it!

  • Ricky got home at four this morning and is finally done dealing with thissnowstorm. I hope. It would be nice to have my hubby home for a little family time tonight!
  • Annnnd we have the potential for twelve more inches of snow on Saturday. Which…

WAHM: How to Find Work From Home Jobs (Part Two of Two)

Last week, I told you how to find freelance work from home jobs. This week I’m going to give you some ideas for how to find jobs that let you work from home in a more corporate way. One important thing to remember is that not all jobs have full work from home options. There are many positions that require to you be in the office to interact with colleagues, clients and vendors. If you’re in a career field like this, then perhaps a partial telecommute option is for you! Here are three…

White Chocolate Christmas Pretzels

I love holiday baking. But lately, I really haven’t been into the whole “baking” form of baking. Which is why I made these awesome pretzels: they were such a blast to make and super easy to clean up after. These are super tasty and make a greatfinger food to leave out at your next holiday party. And if you find some cute treat bags, they’re perfect for a teacher’s gift or for your neighbors! And since they’re soeasy to make, you can make a…

Ten Mama Necessities for Life with a Newborn

Since becoming a mom in real life, the products that our house goes through the most have totally changed. Need suggestions on what to stock up on for the new little one in your life? Slash want to relive the days of babe? Here are the ten products that I seriously can’t get enough of these days.

1. Laundry detergent. Partially because it’s winter and we go through more clothes in the winter, but also because shirts get spit up on them. And when it comes to baby…

Oh Hey There Snow Day

If you’re not from the frigid tundra (like me), then you probably didn’t experience a heckuva snow storm today. Some of you have never experienced snow in this kind of capacity. So if you haven’t…well, let me indulge you in what my life turns into when there’s ten inches plus of snow hanging out on my deck.

My morning started at about 4, when the bean decided not to go back to bed. Well, he decided that he would sleep for fifteen minute increments in my bed. So when I…

DIY: Chalkboard Coasters and Wine Tray

When I saw the idea for chalkboard coasters, I knew I had to have them. But of course, I had to make a matching wine tray to go with them: because we’ll probably be using the coasters when we have company, why not make an entire matching set! It’s a totally unique way to present beverages to your guests. You could also use the tray to lay out different cheeses – but you’d probably need to leave the cheese on a small plate or put some wax paper underneath it…

Ten of My Favorite Mommy Moments. Although They’re All Pretty Good.

1. When he falls asleep on my chest for two hours at a shot. He’s just so sweet.

2. When he coos - it makes me smile all day long.

3. When he gets all cuddled up in his jammies at night. He looks so cozy!

4. When he sits in the crook of the hubby’s arm to watch Sesame Street Truck U.Yep.

5. When he gets the biggest smile on his face and shows off his {lack of} teeth. Gets…

DIY: Make Your Own Table Centerpiece

I saw some inspiration for this project on Pinterest the week before Halloween and knew that it was something I needed to make. I might actually move it up to be our dining room table centerpiece - but for now it looks pretty on my office conference table, donchathink? This was a super easy way to make use of some old wine bottles.…

WAHM Guide: How to Find Work From Home Jobs (Part One of Two)

One of the biggest questions I get from moms who want to work from home is related to the how. How do you actually find a job that allows you to work from home? Well, the answer to that question really depends on the kind of work you’re looking for, what you’re looking to get paid and how flexible the hours need to be. This post is part one of a two post series on where to look for work when you want super flexible hours – which you’ll mostly find with freelance writing…

The Post Where My Lack of Sleep Becomes Glaringly Obvious.

Things that make me happy:

  • Hubs + Baby + Lucy. Obvi.
  • New, amazing opportunities.
  • Delicious recipes that I will be attempting this weekend.
  • Being caught up on laundry. I’m not right now. But the thought of being caught up makes me happy...Continue reading at The Mommyhood Project

DIY Utility Cord Chain Bracelet Bangle

So remember last week I mentioned that I’m all about this DIY stuff, especially gifts that I can actually make myself? Well, that’s true: lurve me a good DIY project. But the thing is, if I’m going to wear it or gift it to someone {or both}, it can’t look like it’s so much homemade – if you catch my drift. And if that was a little too subtle, let me really lay it out there: I like to make things that look like they were bought in a…

Ten Weeks Postpartum: How Life with a Baby Changes Everything

months in…

1. At ten weeks postpartum, RJ has slept through the night three times. I think. Here’s the thing: sleeping through the night isn’t what you think it is before you have a baby. Six to seven hours of solid sleep is considered “sleeping through the night” for a baby at this stage in the game. And that six or seven hour stretch might start at eight o’clock at night. So when your friends say that their babies slept through the night at two months old, that…
