Symptoms to Take Notice of in Children

The NHS has been facing ever-increasing pressures in recent years, with slashed budgets, staff shortages and lack of resources taking its toll on the quality of care. One of the many ways we commonly see the impact of these pressures is in waiting times for GP…

Mother of the Bride Guide

The day you’ve dreamed of for years has finally arrived! Your little girl is all grown up and has chosen a partner to start her life with, and you are officially a MoB -- Mother of the Bride! While congratulatory remarks are appropriate at this juncture, so are a few…

How to Through A Larger Than Life Small Wedding on a Budget

This one is as simple as crowdfunding your honeymoon. It might sound strange at first, but do you really need another blender or set of dinner plates? Instead of having your guests purchase a bunch of things you’ll end up trying to return anyway, why not let them chip in for…

The Dirty Truth

Sigh, I knew eventually it would come to this. At one point or another I was going to write about poop. Like they say, it’s a dirty job but somebody has to…..…

Odd Mom Out

I was a little snotty with the assistant principal at “K’s” parent-teacher conference last night. The middle school was alive with activity parents and students were all over the school meeting with teachers, signing up for after-school activities and having photos taken for what I don’t even know. I don’t know because none of that activity had anything to do with me or my child.

My child is a beautiful 13-year-old girl who wears diapers, speaks in two-word phrases at most and arrives… Continue

Sweet Dreams

One of the sweetest things “K” does is at bedtime. After we’ve given her a shower, put on her p.j.’s, tucked her into bed and, of course, given her a kiss good night, she will pat the bed next to her, smile at whichever one of us is putting her down, and say “here”. She won’t stop until you lay down next to her.

It’s a tight squeeze on her twin bed with her, me, multiple pillows and a large stuffed Blue doll. Usually my head is resting on Blue’s foot and my legs are hanging off the… Continue

Happy Ending

My husband was putting “J” down to bed the other night. I had already said good night and hugged and kissed him and was downstairs folding laundry or putting away the dishes or performing some other evening chore, I’m not sure which and I lost track of how long the two of them had been upstairs when my husband called for me on the stairs. “Can you come help me with?” he asked.

Something must be wrong; I could hear the stress in my husband’s voice. I scurried to the stairs and asked,… Continue

The Truth Hurts

Santa’s not coming to our house this Christmas. Earlier in the year we decided to drop the bomb and tell “J” the truth. It’s been a long year. Telling “J” the “truth” about Santa has been an eye-opener to us about where “J” functions.

Like many people with special needs “J” really struggles with conceptualizing. He is extremely literal. Wrapping his brain around the fact that Santa is not “real” has been nearly impossible and has given us so much insight to how his brain works and how… Continue

The other shoe

“J” had a headache today. He spent most of the morning asleep on the couch and his dad and I spent the morning trying not to hover. Thirteen year old boys get headaches. Everyone gets a headache now and then. Everyone feels a little run down and naps on the couch on a lazy Sunday. When that person is “J”, however, my heart sinks.

It’s an almost every day feeling I describe as “waiting for the other shoe to drop.” You know you’re downstairs and you hear someone taking their shoes off… Continue
