Homes everywhere need cleaning - but few homeowners have the time and energy required to scrub surfaces day in and day out. Mom’s, in particular, are overburdened - and as a result, many are turning to semi-regular cleaning so that their place stays spotless.…

Baby Showers: The Next Big Thing

Like so many modern celebrations, Baby Showers have arrived in the UK from North America. It’s a real tradition over there and, like High School Proms, Halloween and Black Friday, one of those exciting social events that is catching on big time over here.

The idea is simple but universally appealing. Throw a party for the pregnant mother and her…

True Blood vs. American Idol Part 2: Which is More Damaging to Children?

So, I’ve been thinking about American Idol and True Blood lately. You might remember that I recently told a gentleman that I greatly admire that he was off his rocker for allowing his young daughter to watch True Blood.

But was he?

allow my children to watch American Idol. Which of these television shows, truly, is more…

Zombies vs. Birth Control

I am a mother. I am a wife. I am a professional. I have interests and hobbies. I work out sometimes. I cook at least once a week. Sorry, meant to say I cook at most once a week. But when I do, I cook multiple meals. And I don't do white starches... bonus point!

I say all this to communicate the fact that I am a busy woman. I barely have time to floss my own teeth, but I do. Because it's…

From Manslaughter to Homicide...

So, a few weeks ago I accidentally crushed an innocent snail and caused irreparable damage to my children. That was nothing. A couple of nights ago I killed a centipede. A 5-inch centipede that I found in my tub. I had no choice. It was…

True Blood vs. American Idol Part I: Backpedaling to Protect my Cover

A couple of months ago I met someone that I admire greatly. A mutual friend introduced me to him. The three of us were in New York making small talk over coffee. I was doing my best to seem intelligent. I had been feeling a little all over the place and I wanted to come across as someone who was “put together”– which meant that I didn’t talk a whole heck of a lot lest the gentleman I…

Mgazi Says She's Pregnant

The girls were in the tub. This is what I overheard.

Mgazi: I think I have a baby in my tummy.

Zaffy: Well, I should take you straight to the doc -- wait, we're playing pretend, right?

100 Things You Probably Don't Know About Me

I read somewhere that on your 100th blog post you should write 100 things about yourself. So, in honor of my 100th post, I present to you...

100 Things that You Probably Don't Know About Me
  1. I am embroiled in an unhealthy and one-sided love affair with cheap wine.
  2. A colleague and I were once driving in South Africa when we were pulled over by men…

Long Live Russell (or Daddy, You're Not Dead Yet?)

It's late at night -- about 10:30 p.m. the night before Russell's birthday (last night to be exact). We had just picked up the children from the babysitter's and we were driving home. The atmosphere inside the car was calm. Unusual.

The children…

Mgazi Wants to Go It Alone

Mom, You're a B.M.

In the car. This is what I heard:

Zaffron: Mom, you're a B.M.

Before I reacted I took a deep breath. Seemed like this was a lot to take so early in the morning.

Me: I'm sorry, Zaff. Did you say that I'm a B.M.?

Zaffron: No, I said that you are THE B.M.

Me: Zaffy, what does that…

"We're THIS Funny" Or "Russell Gets No Respect"

Everyone was in the bathroom. The whole family. Having a family meeting while Russell was trying to have his own time. This happens to him more times than he'll ever admit. But I will. Right here. Right now.

I asked Russell. "If you look at the entire population, I mean, the whole POPULATION of whatever, the country, the world, what percentage would you think was funny?"

Russell was sitting (the only one sitting in the bathroom, I might add), and said, "funny as in HA…

It's Mummy Juice!

Each year I struggle with finding a semi-healthy snack or treat to send with the kids to school at Halloween time. This year, I found an idea that included wrapping juice boxes in tape with googly eyes... Mummy…

Mgazi Wants Her Own "Partment"

We are in the car.

Mgazi: Mom, how old do I have to be to live in a room by myself?

Me: You don't want to share a room with your sister?

Mgazi: No, I want my own…

I'm 42 and Not Diggin' It

Let's just jump right in. I turned 42 years old last week. I am not happy about it. Let’s talk about why:

  • I sweat for no reason at all. I swear I this didn’t happen to me when I was 41.
  • I have crow’s feet.  Crows feet…

Zaffron's Latest Worstest Day Ever

Zaffy: Mom, I had the worstest day ever.

Me: Oh no! Worse than the last worstest day ever? What happened?

Zaffy: I almost lost my three newest best friends.

Me: Tell me!

Zaffy: Well, my old-new best friend Sydney told my two newer best friends Brooke and Sophia, that I…

Who's Missing Their Underwear?

The kids leave their clothes all over the house. So, when I saw a pair of girl's underwear crumpled on the floor in the hallway, I wasn't surprised. But I was annoyed.

I yelled from the hallway, toward the general vicinity where I thought the children might be. "Who left their underwear on the hallway floor?"

Silence.

"Hello?"

Zaffy yelled back from…

Coffee Affirmations

I don't drink coffee. I've said those words so many times over the last decades. Those days are over. A weekend trip to Kona on the Big Island has changed everything. Russell's uncle grows his own coffee beans in his yard. He made me an espresso with a spoonful of brown sugar and I was hooked.

Since returning home, I've been trying all sorts of coffee preparations and…

The Old People Mafia is After My Husband

My husband, Russell, is 44 years old. Not that old, really, for a guy. (I'm 42 which is ancient, but that's a different story.) Forty-four years old and the AARP will not stop hounding him. Every six months or so he gets another letter in the mail inviting him to "join"…
