Ode to Stay at Home Moms

A friend of mine wrote a guest post on my Stapleton moms blog. She sent it to her former co-workers at CNN, saying, "I'm famous!" and they replied: You used to work with Wolf Blitzer, and now you think you're famous?

She's a stay at home mom to her 2 year old. She obviously had a career that many women would kill for. She also knew that it wasn't the kind of career that mixed with raising a child the way she wanted to, so she gave it up.

Lots of us… Continue

Where's the love, man?

I should have known better than to go to Whole Foods on Valentine's Day.

It was full of hurried and harried Very Important People rushing to get that gorgeous bouquet of flowers, that filet mignon, that bottle of Pellegrino, that Stilton cheese.

Somehow, yesterday's shopping experience left me feeling that it was entirely inappropriate to bring my 2 year old along to the grocery store.

It all begins in the parking lot -- the perpetually full parking lot. SUVs… Continue

Milk and the bottle

Yesterday, my 18 month old son and I went to lunch with two other moms and their 18 month olds.

My son was whining, "Bottle, bottle, bottle," so I ordered some milk and filled his bottle up. The other kids were drinking water from sippy cups.

I should have taken away the bottle a couple of months ago, when my son would take any old sippy cup, or any old bottle, he didn't care either way. It's too late now -- he's attached to the bottle. Not even the sippy cup with the fire engine can…

Mom blogs in the press

Mom blogs are all the rage, says the Denver Post, and advertisers are taking notice.

Mother Goose Mouse is a Parker mom blogging away and, according to the Post, paying the mortgage. Go girl!

GreebleMonkey is another Denver mom blogger, also part of the… Continue

Non-makeup girls

You are either a makeup girl, or you're not.

The makeup girls instinctively know how to apply eyeshadow. They know how to make the most of foundation and blush and eyeliner. They have a skin care regimen.

The rest of us slap on some Oil of Olay, foundation, and on good days, a little mascara and lip gloss.

If I were a makeup company, I would target the non-makeup girls -- those of us who are too intimidated to stop at the makeup counters in the mall. The… Continue

What is your body trying to tell you?

'm watching Oprah (yes, I am a stay at home mom) and guess what the topic is: whacky hormones!

Her guest is Dr. Christiane Northrup, who says that at 35 or so, women go through The Big Change (Menopause? Come on, lots of us are just starting to have kids!!) and our hormones go out of whack.

But -- like many in my fleet of doctors have told me -- the whacky hormones are really just a side effect of something else, something wrong in the soul, something wrong in the heart.… Continue

How long do moms deal with whacky hormones?

How long does it take to get back to normal after the birth of your baby?

Do you ever get back to normal?

It's been 18 months, and I'm still reeling from the whacked out hormones. I was diagnosed with postpartum thyroiditis when my son was 3 months old, after I went to my Doc complaining of a tremor in my left hand and an irritating level of hyperactivity. Heart palipatations, hot flashes, sleeping just a few hours a night -- and my baby was a good sleeper from the very…

Mommy Wars

It's the question that every mom has to answer: work or stay at home?

If you believe the media, picking one pits you in a battle against the women who chose the other route, as USA Today reports that the Mommy Wars are far from over.

It's hard to have it all, you know?

We women work hard to get ahead in our careers, and then when a kid comes along, you have to… Continue
