Potty training 101, or is this 102?....

Potty training 101 was last year with our first son that does NOT deal well with or want change. Now that wasn't a party! My partner and I are still laughing at and scarred from that little parenting experience. Good times! So I guess this time around does make this 102.

So now it's time for our 2 1/2 year old. He has shown every single sign possible. He's very text book and is ready to go whether we are or not. He takes his diaper off at every opportunity. Pretty! Especially when I… Continue

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht

Your hat strategically dipped below one eye

Your scarf it was apricot

You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte

And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner

They'd be your partner, and....

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you

You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you

Don't you? Don't you?

You had me several years… Continue

How old are we when we begin to mis-sing the words to songs?....

3 is the answer. At least in my mini-van or otherwise known the cheerio mobile.

Carly Simon/You're So Vain: "I had some dreams there were clouds in my coffee, clouds in my coffee and"......okay, we all know the words by now!

3 year old: "There were clowns in my coffee" Mommy, why does she have clowns in her coffee?

Me: Not enough coffee in me, with or without clowns. "Gosh honey I just don't know. We'll have to ask mom about that when she gets home tomorrow,… Continue

To spank or not?....

Such a controversy! I've been involved in this discussion with my cousin and trusted friends more times then I care to admit.

My partner and I personally go back and forth on this subject. We have not only on tried out each side of the fence, but we have actually sat on the fence just trying to figure it all out.

My personal biggest issue with spanking is this, I would never hit anyone. Why would I hit a child any child! It isn't logical to me.

I was spanked and… Continue

Does teaching our children not to say "NO" to their parents and teachers, set them up to never say "NO" to adults, even predators?....

This is a question that was raised based on one of my posts regarding my 3 year old defiantly telling his preschool teacher "NO".

While I know exactly how I feel on the subject, another reader of my blog did not. It left me wondering how other parents felt about teaching our children to say "NO" to adults. The concern being that it might make them feel that they couldn't say "NO" to any adult, even one that might have predator's intentions.

We have made it very, very clear… Continue

Why is it when you need space the most, they are the cutest?....

Okay, so here's my Friday. I drop the boys off at school. It's my 2 year olds last day of tot school. I spend my last free morning, until September, grocery shopping. I rush to school to pick them up, only to hear about the "NO" mouth that my 3 year old had with his teacher. I come home to a house that looks like a bomb went off because we were running late getting to school, on top of 40 bags of groceries to put away. I hadn't even bathed yet and we were having a dinner… Continue

Teething, it's not a party....

At the suggestion of my friend here's my post about teething. Among other 2 year toddler tortures.

I think that she found the title more amusing then what we are going through. At least I hope!

With our first son, I knew right away that teething wasn't going to be a party, but everything else that goes with it....really! The worse then normal diapers, the constant runny nose that I felt compelled to explain to everyone "no really, he doesn't have a cold he's teething". I… Continue

Who is the true "Spirited Child"?....

Post 4 in a series of 4

Okay, I'm a day or two late finishing this series, but I'm also striving to raise two toddlers to be the best that they can be, so work with me here.

Both of our children are true "Spirited Children". We have our 3 year old spirited introvert, and our 2 year old spirited extrovert.

"The Spirited Child" is a term I have heard used so loosely, and I have used loosely, many times. It's always been in the context of "he/she's spirited" to… Continue

Do children come with manuals?....

My partner and I feel like maybe the do, because our manual just arrived last Friday. Maybe a little late, but better late then never!

Between the discipline suggestions and reminders from my troops, and the discovery of a book titled "Raising Your Spirited Child". We feel like maybe children DO come with manuals. When persistent enough in finding out what they need, what their triggers are, what we need as parents, and ultimately what we need as a family to be… Continue

How long does it take to put your "mommy pants" back on after they've been missing?....

Well for me it took until 1:00 p.m. the following day. They boys went to school and I parked and talked on the phone with my cousin who had been calling for the past two days to check on me.

I had heard about a book "Raising Your Spirited Child". We've always know that both of our boys are spirited, but what did the really mean? Anyone that knows me, has heard me say more then once "I am obsessed with the need to understand what is triggering their poor behavior to begin with". I'm… Continue

Where do our "mommy pants" go when they are completely missing, like socks from the dryer?....

I'm not sure, but they were missing for a couple of days. Flat our missing. I looked everywhere. In the wash, in the closet, under the bed. Nowhere to be found.

However, my 3 year old did find his "no" mouth again. HHHHMMMM, just about the time that I lost my "mommy pants". I wonder which came first?

We spent two days going at it like a couple on the brink of divorce! Time-outs did nothing but make him cry and frustrate me because his "no" mouth just returned a few hours… Continue

Who decides when miracle days fall from the sky?....

How does this happen, and who decides when this happens? Is it the parenting Gods/Goddesses? Is it as simple as a good night of sleep for all of us on the same night?

We had such a rough day on Sunday. We were cooped up in extra cold weather. READ: 8 - 24 degrees! Well beyond the "they're boys bundle them up and throw them out" advice. Plus that means that I'm out there too....NOT! They were tired of their toys, we were tired of tap dancing to keep them entertained. You know, puzzles… Continue
