Does Your Child Get the Reading & Spelling Support They Need?

At our Dyslexia Centre we hear the same complaint over and over: schools are not providing enough effective support for children with reading and spelling difficulties.

There are many reasons for this - you might want to read a bit more about them at my wordpress blog: "Why Doesn't My Child Get Effective Literacy Remediation in School?" http://t.co/qlEd0EdF - but whatever the reasons, the results are usually the same:

When a child struggles with literacy, they not only fall behind their peers. They lose confidence, sometimes withdraw and sometimes begin to act up or play the clown. Often, they begin to try to avoid reading or writing because the sense of 'failure' is so negative.

Teachers very often are aware that they may not have sufficient specialist dyslexia training, or effective resources. This can be frustrating for them too - they want to help. However, it so often can come down to funding. Schools have limited funds for training staff and for SEN support.

Prioritising SEN interventions can be an issue, too. Many children with dyslexic difficulties are very smart. These children may excel in other subject areas - such as arts or sports - and develop strategies for coping. One result of this can be that children with 'more severe' difficulties will be prioritised for support. Children with dyslexia can therefore can miss out on provision of intervention.

If this is the case for your child, you may need to find effective ways to support them at home. Multi-sensory learning - using sight, sound, touch and voice, is effective.

Our education charity has now developed a multi-sensory iPad App: "Spell Trekking". This is based on the program I've used with children and adults for 5 years at our Centre - it works brilliantly and is stress-free for users.

Encourage your child to work through the Spell Trekking lessons in order. 10 minutes a day will build confidence, along with reading and spelling improvements. Spell Trekking feels easy and fun - with an appealing Space Travel theme to encourage them as they go!
