Are you visiting the beautiful state of North Carolina this year? How about the Valle Crucis area, a park community known for its skiing, cycling, hiking and canoeing activities? This relatively new area is an ideal location for families with children because of its many hiking and skating paths and park playgrounds.
Along the way however, don’t forget to sample the community’s hospitality. There are a variety of stores in the heart of the community, with excellent restaurants and a variety of cuisine styles.
Here are the three best restaurants to check out after a full day of hiking when you’re ready to dig in.
Over Yonder brands itself as an Appalachian restaurant, Chef Andy Long and staff have been opened since 2014 and have served Appalachian specialties in a casual and fun way. Although the menu changes frequently, they serve a variety of lunch favorites such as seasonal vegetable quiche with soup or salad, piquillo pesto poboy with roasted seasonal peppers, and the lamb burger with local lamb. Dinner features include shrimp dip, steak pot pie, and crispy duck breast. They also serve a number of whiskeys, cocktails and brews. It’s definitely a restaurant that has fun, since their Ron Swanson Dinner (based on the comedian) is a popular event in May.
The Mast Farm Inn
This is not only a fine restaurant but also a farmhouse that’s been kept up and appropriately decorated. There are Old World dining rooms along with lodging in a number of excellent rooms, including deluxe farmhouses named “Cousin Sarah”, “Nell’s Room”, “Joe Mast” and “Aunt Leona.” Simplicity’s Pantry is on hand and serves handcrafted, homemade gourmet meals; dinner, lunch and desserts. You can order them in your room or take them home as well.
Watauga Farm Diner
Watauga Farm Diner serves a simple selection of sandwiches, hamburgers and other traditional American flavors. They have thick meats, strong flavor, BBQ specialties and low prices. Watauga Farm Diner is listed as a location in Banner Elk, but it’s actually in the territory of Valle Crucis right around the Mast Store, a well known landmark.
Of course there are a number of stores beyond the area in Boone as well as Banner Elk. But many visitors like stopping right along the hiking trail and stopping for a quick lunch or dinner. The community is nice and quiet compared to some of the higher traffic cities of North and South Carolina.
Whether you’re looking for landmarks in Valle Crucis, like Crab Orchard or the park, or want to go horseback riding or fly-fishing, there’s always something fun to do and something good to eat when you come and experience the definitive farm community.
