You graduated from college and put in some years in corporate America. You're on your way up the ladder. Maybe you're in middle management, maybe higher. From all outward appearances, life is good. So, why can't you ignore this nagging feeling that you were made for more?
Mid-career is a time that many grown-ups really contemplate what they want to be when they "grow up". At this point, most of us have figured out what makes us happy, what we value most and how we want to spend our time. Couple that with more financial freedom to explore it and you have the perfect formula for pursuing your passion.
So, how exactly do you do that? And what if you still don't know what you're passionate about? The steps below will help you figure it out and be well on your way to living the life of your dreams.
Step 1 - Do the work to rediscover or uncover your passion.
Ask yourself these questions and write out your responses.
Think back to when you were eight years old. What did you want to be when you grew up? Research has shown that at this age, children do not yet take into account what the world values and their opinions aren't skewed by that. Often times, this holds the key to what you're truly passionate about.
What activities can you get lost in for hours and lose track of time?
What do others say you're really good at?
What do you feel like you were born to do?
Step 2 - Get specific about what you want to do with it.
Do you want to pursue your passion as a career or as ahobby?
Where do you see yourself with it in 6 months, 1 year, 5 years?
Step 3 - Set goals and break them into smaller steps.
Do some research on what steps you need to take to make it happen. What type of training does it require to pursue this goal? Do you need to take a class? Get credentialed? Talk to others in this field and get as much information as you can.
Break it down into mini-goals. What is one specific thing you can do today? This week? This month?
Step 4 - Remove roadblocks and obstacles.
Roadblocks and obstacles often stall even the most well-intentioned. What could stand in the way of you pursuing your passion? Make a list of possible roadblocks and come up with an action plan for overcoming them.
Step 5 - Enlist the help of others.
Accountability and support systems are crucial for anyone working to accomplish goals, especially one this deeply personal. Ask yourself what support you need to make it happen. Talk to your spouse, friends and colleagues. Enlist the help of a life coach or someone who can help you set goals and provide you with accountability.
That’s it, five steps to get you on the path to finally pursuing the life of your dreams. So, what are you waiting for?
