For Pre-K we focused a lot on learning our ABC's.  We did this by learning a letter a week.  Starting with Aa and moving on till we finished with Zz.  This approach worked really well for my daughter.  Check out below what steps we took and try some out for yourself!

Learn A Letter A Week

Practice Writing In Upper & Lower Case
I found an awesome website that for free you can print out traceable and practice printing worksheets.
Every day we would practice writing the letter for the week.  To print out the worksheets click HERE.

Letter Sounds

Learn what sound the letter makes.  Practice with some letter phonics worksheets HERE.  As we learned a new letter we would sing the letter sounds song.  Learn the letter sounds song by watching this video on Youtube:

Make An Animal Puppet
Click HERE to print out an animal puppet for free.
Have your child color the animal, cut it out and paste it onto a popsicle stick.
Give your animal a name and food it likes to eat that starts with the letter of the week.
For example: Adam the Ape likes to eat Apples & Felicia the Flamingo who likes to eat French Fries.
As the weeks go by practice each animal.  The repetition helps your child recognize the letter sounds and connect it to words that start with it.

Find That Letter!

While your out and about shopping, at the library or even at home, have your child try to find the letter for the week in both upper and lower case.  Make it fun and see how many you guys can find in one week!

Make Something

Make something that starts with the letter of the week.  We liked getting in the kitchen and cooking yummies from scratch that started with the letter.  Like brownies, cookies, fish tacos, pizza (with a cauliflower crust!) and muffins, to name a few.

Once you get pretty far into the alphabet you can do lots of fun activities!

Play The Letter Game

I made alphabet cards out of colored construction paper.  A to Z in upper and lower case.  You can play many ways with alphabet cards.
For example:
Throw out 3 cards at a time and ask a question.  Throw out another 3, ask a question and so on.
Question examples:
Which card is the ____ card? (pick a letter)
Which card starts with your name?
Which card makes the ____ sound?
Which cards are upper case?  Lower case?
Which card does ____ start with? (pick an animal)
I'll also lay out all the cards, out of order, in upper case.  I'll hand my daughter a lower case card and have her find it's match.  She gets excited every time she finds a match.

ABC Magnets

I bought some alphabet magnets at a school supply store in town. Put them up on the fridge and have your child practice spelling out their first and last name.  Also, recreate the story of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom on your fridge.  Check that out HERE.

Along with learning a letter a week, we also learned a number a week.  We stopped at 20 and weekly reviewed counting, recognizing and writing 1 to 20.  Print out number worksheets HERE.
*It's made me one proud mommy to catch my daughter writing her name and other letters while she draws and doodles.
