Women have since the dawn of mankind always been considered the lesser gender. The ones who are expected to be seen, not heard. The ones doing so much, yet receive so little in return. While things are changing for the better in the modern era, the differences still exist.
This is very apparent when one considers single moms. When a woman falls into the category of ‘single mom’ not only is she a woman struggling to be heard in this world, she also becomes the guardian of her kids, the sole provider for her family, and her own superhero trying to save the day.
Becoming your own superhero - The Iron Lady
Once there was a 18-year-old girl who fell in love with the handsome man who lived across the street. He may have been older, but when it concerns the matters of the heart, who can intervene? So they get married and not even a year passes before she becomes pregnant with her first child. The marriage which was all smooth sailing till then suddenly encounters the stormy seas with the loss of their first child.
A few years later, she conceives again with her second and soon afterward the third. However, not even the birth of the two adorable kids could patch up the marriage that was already on the verge of collapse. And so with the unexpected pregnancy of the fourth child, the husband who never truly supported her, left her forever.
How was she, a young mother with three little kids, who has had no proper academic qualifications supposed to go through life alone? But go through she did. Struggling to look after her kids in between the ever-changing temporary jobs that paid only a meager salary, she fought her way through to ensure that her children never grew up to lead a remorseful life as she did. To bring up her daughter, she was even willing to work in construction and steel manufacturing industry that shows her courage to fight with difficulties of life.
As the children grew up, it was evident that with the troublesome childhood which undoubtedly affected them immensely, that they were struggling to cope up with reality. Drugs and bad company, depression and suicidal ideation caused the two elder kids to deviate from the loving care of their mother.
Not one to give up now, she made sure that they knew they were always welcome, that they would always be loved. No matter what.
Alone with the youngest, she worked day and night to send her off to college. To ensure she found stability in her life. To ensure that she never had to go through life the same way she did. Because she knew how harsh life was, how unwelcoming the world was, and the many difficulties a woman alone in this world would have to face to get through the day.
So here I am, a proud daughter of a mother who fought bravely to make me who I am today. She is the reason I am who I am, honest and caring, independent and strong. To all you mothers out there, don’t give up. When the time gets tough, don’t give up. When the world pushes you back, don’t give in. Fight. Be your own superhero. Your kids would be eternally grateful to you.
