April 2014 Parenting Tip- Time for a Reading Revitalizer

Magical Book

  • Even if the book you/your child has chosen contains verbiage, pretend it doesn’t.
    • Who says you have to follow what the book says anyway?
    • This is a creative way to keep the story and contents fresh and different every time.
    • Allow your child to help create the story.
    • Is he/she pointing to something, telling you what it going on?

  • Take a great short book and extend it:
    • Sometimes our kids love a certain book and we wish it was longer.
    • Utilize what is written but take it a step further.
    • What colors do you see on the page?
    • Take the storyline and relate it to something your child will recognize, i.e. “Is the doggy playing ball?  You love to play ball with your doggy, right?  You are a great thrower.  Show me how you throw the ball”.
  • Think outside the box:
    • Don’t let the title of the book and its contents keep you in the box.
    • Focus on the shapes, colors, sounds or counting and utilize the reading time as a teaching lesson.
    • Purchase books with little to no words which will force you to tell your own story.  I love the Carl the Dog Series by Alexandra Day.

  • Have fun:
    • There is nothing better than acting silly with your kids and spending quality time together.
    • Be animated and get into the story using sound effects, different voices and facial expressions.
    • Allow your child to tell YOU the book by asking questions like, “what do YOU see?” and “What is the doggy doing?”

Reading is such an important activity with your kids that creates the perfect nap time, bedtime or anytime routine.  Make sure to leave extra time to share this special time with your little one.  You are teaching them to love books and be imaginative,  which can open up a whole new world of adventures you can construct together!  Your children will look forward to reading time together and so will you!
