Babies and Pets: How to Keep Safe Both of Them? Tips for Newbie Parents

When you get a new pet or a new baby it can be incredibly overwhelming. There is so much to keep track of and so much to do. And the wrong mistake can have seriously dire consequences. For that reason, it’s important to know what you have to pay attention to and what you can safely ignore. Only then, will you be in a position to make the best of out the situation and – as far as possible – actually enjoy the experience of having a new member of the family.

So, the question then becomes, what should you pay attention to?

Young organisms are fragile

The first thing that you need to be aware of is that new organism doesn't yet have all the defenses built up to keep them safe – this is particularly true of viruses and bacteria. So, it’s important that when there is an illness of some kind, you seek out medical attention. Sure, most of the time it will be nothing, but you don’t want to get it wrong that one time when it isn’t.

Note that this does not mean that you protect your pet or your child by keeping them away from bacteria and dirt. This might keep them safe in the short run but isn’t a good long-term strategy. This is because if the immune systems of the young ones aren't tested and trailed, it will end up weak. Robustness comes forth from regular exposure to small amounts of dirt.

So don’t get all hectic the moment they’re touching around on the floor. That is only natural and how they build their ability to fight off more serious problems down the line. That’s how you get good-behaving babies, pets and get companies reviews.

Let them sleep

Another common problem that people have – particularly with newborns – is that they think that feeding is more important than sleeping. Yes, giving them a regular schedule is good for them, but they need to adapt to it naturally. To wake them up in order to feed them can disturb much-needed sleep – something that both newborns and young pets need a lot of us as they grow and process the experiences of the world around them.

So, feed them to a schedule when they’re awake. But don’t disturb the sleep that they’re having when they aren’t. So you can take your time to explore websites like

Thinking every whim must be tended to

There is this common perception that if a baby cries, a parent must answer. That’s because they believe that if the baby is crying, then they are doing something wrong. That’s not the case. Sometimes babies can be well fed, clean and be perfectly well tended to and they will still cry like you’re the evilest person in the world.

For that reason, it’s okay to let your child cry out sometimes. This doesn’t make you a bad parent.

It’s the same for pets. Of course, you want to give them as much attention as you can. At the same time, sometimes you can’t. Don’t feel guilty about that. Ultimately they’re going to be spending more time on their own anyway, so let them get used to finding their own ways to entertain themselves (even as you spend time with them as well) and you’ll prepare them for the best life they can live.

It’s okay to break rules sometimes

No, it is not. If you’ve set some rules then it’s important that everybody in the house keeps to them. If they don’t, then this will cause serious confusion on the part of both the pet and your child. It will also create an unlevel playing field wherein one parent is stricter than the others – which just isn’t fair to the parent trying to uphold the rules.

For that reason, it is highly important that you discuss this at length beforehand, so that you all have a firm resolve. Because only in this way can you make sure that when they beg, or plead, or cry out, or in other ways try to manipulate you emotionally you’re in a position to resist. After all, you’re doing it for the long-term good of the family, even if it doesn’t feel like.

Each pet and baby is different

If you think that your kid or your pet is like clay that you get to mold into an image, then boy (or girl, let’s not be sexist) are you in for a surprise! Every animal and baby have their own personalities, ticks, wants, and desires. Many of these are inborn and outside of your control. Some babies don’t cry. Some babies do. Some pets are so easy to housetrain they must have started learning in the womb, others feel the need to piss on things.

Yes, you can try to shape them over time, but be aware that that might not work out as you thought.

Just as importantly, what you see is not what you get. That is obvious with a baby. You expect them to grow up, become more mature and say stuff like ‘I hate you, you’ll never understand me!’

But that isn’t just true of people. Pets also go through stages of development, where they are exposed to hormones and where they learn a lesson (sometimes the wrong ones) from what happens to them in their environment. That means that what you see is not what you get. They might turn out incredibly differently.

One place this matters a lot is if you go to the pound to pick up animals. There they will often be deeply unhappy and have serious abandonment issues. That can change drastically after they find that they have a new family and new possibilities. So don’t give up on those animals just because they’re not immediately willing to play. Besides, mongrel dogs live far longer than ‘pure’ breeds and can, therefore, be a part of your family for far longer.

Last words

Pets and babies are a lot of work – but they do not need to be as horrible as they’re made out to be if you focus on the right things. If things are a little different from how they normally are that might just be that your child or pet has their own personality. If on the other hand, they get sick then it’s time to seek out medical attention. If you can follow that simple rule then you’ll make things much easier for yourself.

Also, understand that who they are will be a mix of what their environment is like as well as their own personality. There simply is no getting around that. If you don’t, then you will be in for a big surprise. So learn to love them for who they are – victories and foibles and all – for if you try to make them into something they’re not cut out to be, they’ll be unhappy and you’ll be frustrated.

Those really are the most important lessons to learn.
