I am exploring several theories as to why so many friends of mine have the summertime blues right now.

Is it because it is the beginning of August and all the stores have started their back-to-school sales already? I know this is really bothering my son, as he doesn't even want us to visit that section of the store...not even when I just want to pick up some notebooks for myself. He is appalled by it. Do these sales also remind parents what it was like to be a kid and we remember that sinking feeling that our summertime lazy days were all coming to an end?

Or maybe adults are feeling blue because the family didn't really take a big vacation this summer because they are saving up for something else in their lives and trying to be fiscally responsible. But, because they didn't take that big trip to Anywhere Else, they now regret it as pictures of other people's vacations continuously fill up their social media timelines.

Or maybe...just maybe...it is actually a combination of the two: We are jealous of the free-from-responsibilities childhood and we are stuck in a rut of working too hard.

I really feel like it is this last one, especially since there seem to be a few new studies out about how hard parents are working right now. I don't think we need studies about that topic in the summertime, but they insist on being published. So, yes, it's true: Stay-at-home-moms clock in around 100 hours in their workweek and Dads struggle with work-life balance just as much as Moms do.

So, yeah, it sounds like everyone could use a summer vacation right about now.

If you could plan the perfect summer vacation for yourself, where would you go? Tell me in the comments.
