Cheap Ways to Add Extra Living Space to Your Home

If you listen to the news, we are no longer in a recession. However, the average family still isn’t able to buy a larger house as their families expand. It could be that we have gone into debt during those dry years and it could also be that the cost of living has increased beyond the limits of recovery. In any case, if you are in need of extra living space but unable to move to a larger, and more expensive home, there are several cheap ways to add that space you so desperately need.

Close in Large Porches

One of the original selling points of the home you are currently in may have been the large screened in porch you’ve enjoyed over the past several years. Unfortunately, you no longer have the convenience of letting that space go unused. You are in desperate need of another bedroom or two. Why not close it in so that it can be used as bedrooms now but later you can convert it back to a closed in porch or patio?

Convert Attached Garages

Attached garages are sometimes a cheap way to add extra living space. You may want to close in the front doors but if not, it’s not difficult to insulate the garage prior to putting up drywall. Not only can you use that extra space now, but later you can convert that garage to an efficiency if you so desire. Garage efficiencies can bring in much-needed revenue if you rent them out!

Steel Garden Buildings

Another extremely cheap way to add extra living space is to build a prefab metal building. Steel building cost is so much less than the cost of having a concrete structure build that you will wonder why you hadn’t thought of this in the past. Manufacturing companies like Armstrong Steel allow you to use an online calculator to get an instant quote for your buildings, after choosing dimensions, roof type, accessories, etc. If you need that extra space for a noisy teenager or a mother-in-law who’s come to live with you, a steel garden building is just what the doctor ordered.

Reclaim Attic Space

In the UK, loft conversions are quite popular. Their economy is in no better shape than ours here in the U.S., so they have taken to reclaiming attic space that is just begging to be used. Loft conversions make wonderful bedrooms and some families even use that reclaimed space for family rooms, recreation rooms or even home offices. That spare room that had been used for an office is needed as an extra bedroom, so where better than the attic where you’ll have plenty of peace and quiet to focus on getting your work done?

It isn’t always easy or affordable to gain that extra space your family so desperately needs, but these four ideas should give you a place to start. You really can add extra space on a limited budget. Just be creative and work with what you have. From extra space in your back yard that’s begging for a garden building to reclaiming wasted attic space, if you think about it, you have something you can use.
