Christmas Traditions: Butter Thumbprint Cookies

Christmas Traditions: Part 2: Butter Thumbprint Cookies

Cookie making! Yay! So in the midst of getting the house prepped for 20 plus guests tomorrow, I realized Blake needed some good one on one time. I admit I used the TV a wee bit today to help entertain her as I whipped up green bean casserole and sweet potatoes... then I felt both guilty and proud as she repeated lines from Handy Manny... it was time to zap the TV and focus on my little peanut.

What better way then to make some cookies together... especially a recipe for Butter Cookies that hark from my own mama's grey tin recipe box. These cookies are so versatile... fill them with chocolate chips or your favorite jelly (last Christmas I did Fig Preserves, yum!) The recipe is typed on a large white index card. Spilled drops of vanilla are like precious watermarks from yesteryears. The last part of the recipe is written in my mom's loopy handwriting.

Blake loved helping mama. I rolled the cookies into the balls at first, and then set Blake on the step stool. I showed her how to "poke, poke" the cookies with my thumb-print, she liked using her index finger. Then I brought out the milk chocolate chips and she got so excited. Several of the cookies got poked more than once, several got a cluster of chocolate chips, and several got a big kiss "MUAH" from Blake. We finished off our baking by testing a few... nothing beats eating warm cookies in the cool autumn outdoors.

Butter Thumbprint Cookies
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 pound of butter
2/3 cups sugar
3 egg yolks, beaten
1 tsp vanilla

Cream butter and sugar. Add beaten yolks, then add flour and vanilla. If batter is too soft, add flour or refrigerate. Roll into balls, indent with finger and fill indentation with chocolate chip or jelly. Bake at 350 for about 10 mins.
