Detroit Mom Charged For Hit-and-Run Death of Infant Son

Hit and run crimes are some of the most serious and heartbreaking, especially when the victim or victims die. A recent incident involving a Detroit mother and her infant son illustrates this sad ending and the surprising consequences that followed.

Six Victims Involved

The crash involved two vehicles in the Motor City on Puritan at Archdale, according to Detroit police. The victims' vehicle involved a mom, 40, who was driving a minivan with several occupants. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says that Latoya Sharese Powels was with her three children in the vehicle along with another child and a grandmother of Powels' children.

The driver who caused the powerful collision was Deandre L. Cody, 31, also of Detroit. Officials say that Cody allegedly crashed into the side of the Powels' minivan around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 18.

Driver Flees The Scene

The infant, 6-month-old Demetrius Brown, was killed in the crash, pronounced dead at the hospital. Two sisters, ages 2 and 4, were also critically injured and a 12-year-old boy was also injured. Three of the four children were ejected in the horrific crash.

Cody allegedly took off immediately following the scene, Detroit police reported. He was arrested for these reasons: leaving the scene of an accident causing death, driving with a suspended license and other counts. He is facing up to 15 years behind bars.

More Serious Charges Imposed

The tragic hit and run story also developed an interesting and somber twist. The victim, Latoya Sharese Powels, was also arrested and charged in the incident. According to police, although she lost her infant son, she was also allegedly at fault during the crash. According to Abels & Annes, “a driver involved in an accident, particularly if there are any injuries, must remain at the scene (with exceptions if he or she needs immediate medical attention) and provide specific information to law enforcement and to the other drivers and/or passengers involved in the accident.”

Powels was allegedly drunk and driving and has been charged with multiple offenses including involuntary manslaughter—homicide, operating with a high blood alcohol level (known as super drunk) and driving with a suspended license.

Powels has also been charged with child abuse for not having three of the children in seat belts.

This is a tragic incident allegedly involving alcohol, other driving offenses and a deadly hit and run accident. In this unusual case, the victim was also a contributor of the collision. Whenever a driver's involved in an accident, whether at-fault or not, he or she should stop and exchange personal and insurance information, or you may be faced with criminal charges, too.
