I’ve had to do some hard things in my life; I listened on the phone as my doctor told me I had breast cancer, then somehow managed to catch a flight from San Francisco to New York to be at my breast surgeon’s office the next morning; I’ve buried a husband…scattered his ashes in the ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia; I’ve flown to Russia and adopted a daughter as a single mother; but I don’t think I have done anything harder than dropping Elle off at a respite home this morning…getting in the car and driving away without her.
