Leave it up to Pixar
to have you crying in the first five minutes of a kids movie. I remember going to see it in the theater with my husband years ago. We love Finding Nemo <3 And now we can see it in 3D! So, to start our Kindergarten year off, we did a fun lesson plan centered around Finding Nemo.
I'm Not A Nemo Fish, I'm A Clown Fish!
I'm guilty myself of seeing a clown fish and calling it Nemo.
Clown Fish and Sea Anemones Work Together by Martha E. H. Rustad
is a great book with large colorful pictures for little ones wanting to learn about clown fish and their anemone home.
Fun fact! Clown fish have mucus on their bodies that help protect them against the anemones sting.
Coral Reefs Are Awesome!
Coral Reefs by Jason Chin is a beautifully illustrated book talking about the relationships between the reef sea animals. Learn about predators, prey, symbiosis and adaptation. Also learn how coral, even though it looks like a plant, is really an animal!
Click HERE to watch a coral reef video with some cool sea animals in it!
Coral Reefs by Gail Gibbons is a great book that shows lots of different types of coral and many of the animals that live in the reef. It's a lot of fun finding out the names of each one and picking them out again on another page.
to watch Underwater Masters of Disguise.
Make Reef Art!
We took out the watercolors and Kiley painted her own coral reef. Full of schools of fish, Nemo, anemone, coral, an octopus and plankton.
Know Your Information!
It's a good idea to have a plan in case your child ever finds themselves lost. As a family you can decide on safe spots, when to stay put, who can help and so on. It's also important for you child to know your name (not just Mommy/Daddy) and a phone number. Kiley spent the week learning our phone number by writing it and repeating it over and over to a tune.
When Dory and Marlin find an address on the goggles they ask for directions on how to get there. Directions can tell you how to get some place or how to build, make or cook something. Have your child practice following directions.
We printed out this really cool Nemo 3D papercraft at spoonful.com
. We followed the directions on how to put it together!
I also read out a list of directions I made for Kiley to follow, which lead her to a surprise!
Dory has a serious memory problem. She will forget you right after she meets you. Poor girl. Practice your memory skills by playing a matching game. I googled
Finding Nemo pics and used PicMonkey
to make a game spreadsheet. You can use mine if you like. I printed it out on card stock paper.
Just Keep Swimming!
"Hey there, Mr. Grumpy Gills. When life gets you down do you wanna know what you've gotta do? Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming." This is a good motto for us starting the school year back up. Especially after summer and there are some things Kiley doesn't remember and can get frustrated with. We incorporated this motto and it's really helped her keep going and have confidence in herself.
Go See The Movie! In 3D!!
Finding Nemo is such a sweet and funny story with lots of loveable characters.
With voice talents: Ellen DeGeneres, Al Brooks, Willem Dafoe, Eric Bana and the great John Ratzenberger.
disneyrewards.com is offering a free movie ticket! Click HERE to see about getting one!
One of our favorite quotes is from Dory: "I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy."
What's your favorite quote?
