Five of the Best Over-the-Counter Cosmetic Treatments

Professional cosmetic treatments are popular for a reason. Those stunning before and after photos shown at spas and treatment centers entice plenty of people looking to make cosmetic improvements. However, professional treatments are not cheap. To assist beauty seekers looking to get top-notch results at home for less, here are the five best over-the-counter cosmetic treatments:

1) Retinoids

Retinoids are skin products using the same ingredient as the popular prescription, Retin-A, in non-prescription strengths. Long known to help with wrinkles and signs of aging, these preparations can smooth and restore elasticity to the skin. The main side effect of retinoids is skin dryness, so it's a good idea to get one that combines a moisturizer.

2) Laser Hair Removal

While hair removal can be done quickly and effectively at a professional center, it can also be done at home. The price for an effective home laser hair removal device is not cheap, but if there is a significant amount of skin to treat, the price may represent a reasonable investment. These lasers generally only treat a small area at one time and require multiple treatments to permanently remove hair.

3) Seaweed-Based Skincare

There is a famous seaweed cream available developed by a former NASA scientist who came up with the formula to treat burn scars, but even less expensive and less famous products can work wonders. Seaweed can help exfoliate the skin and provide a degree of softness comparable to retinoids. It should be noted that it will not eliminate spider veins. According to Ivein Vein Center, spider vein treatment can be performed effectively using a variety of treatments, but serious issues may require professional care.

4) Minoxidil Hair Products

For thinning or patchy hair, no over-the-counter product has been shown to work as well as minoxidil. It is the primary ingredient in the majority of hair restoration shampoos and can be effective for both men and women.

5) Tooth Whitening Kits

Tooth whitening at a dentist can be quick but expensive. It can be done at home by utilizing whitening strips, whitening toothpaste systems, and other kits. While many toothpastes will have "whitening" on the label, getting a kit specifically designed for whitening will give the best results.

Not every cosmetic treatment requires a visit to a spa or aesthetician to get results. With a little research into particular brands, many cosmetic issues can be safely and effectively treated at home. Consider the products listed above to achieve those desired results at a much more desirable cost.
