You could also combine the use of home remedies with medical treatment for even better results. Whichever the reason, here are a few things you can do from home to relieve your symptoms:
Milk thistle is a herb that will keep the blood clean and protect the liver, which makes it an effective psoriasis remedy. The recommended dosage is 300 milligrams of milk thistle three times per day for approximately three months.
Aloe Vera is a safe and natural psoriasis remedy. Patients participating in a trial experienced a huge reduction in lesions after four weeks of treatment. A cream containing 0.5% aloe vera extract was used in the trial, and was applied to the affected areas three times per day. Herbalists recommend keeping the skin saturated in the cream as much as possible until the psoriasis is healed.
Cayenne pepper is an effective natural psoriasis remedy as it contains a substance (capsaicin) which relieves pain and itching associated with this skin condition. It can be found in capsules or in creams.
Petroleum jelly is one of the cheap and effective ways to control the build-up of skin that occurs due to psoriasis, as it keeps skin well moisturized. Simply apply a small amount to the affected areas each day, especially after a bath or shower.
Baking soda helps treat the itchiness associated with psoriasis. Simply dissolve 1/3 cup of baking soda into 1 gallon of water, and the soak a washcloth into this mixture. Wring out the cloth and then apply it directly to the affected skin. Repeat this several times.
Apple Cider vinegar is known for treating inflammation. Add a cupful to your bathwater or apply it directly on the affected areas with a cotton ball. Fingernails and toenails affected by psoriasis can be soaked in a solution of apple cider vinegar and water for a few minutes daily.
Cocoa butter helps suppress excessive T-cell activity in the immune system, which could help treat conditions associated with overactive immune systems, such as psoriasis and other skin conditions.
Oatmeal is known for softening and soothing the skin. It works best when mixed with warm bathwater, soak for 10-15 minutes and pat yourself dry or slough off the scales softly. These warm baths can also be mixed with Dead Sea salts or Epsom salts, which help in removing scales.
Coconut oil has been found to be an excellent natural treatment for relieving psoriasis. You can either take 2 tablespoons of coconut oil each day by adding it to your coffee or tea, or you can apply it topically onto the affected area 3 times per day.
Oregano oil possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties, which may be helpful with some infections associated with psoriasis. Oregano oil can be purchased at most health food stores.
Evening Primrose oil capsules as a dietary supplement may also help with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis treatment. It has been shown to significantly improve the dryness and the flakiness of the skin. Though it may take months to see results, consistency is important and patience is a virtue.
Tea Tree oil is especially helpful for scalp psoriasis due to its antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Rub essential tea tree oil into your scalp and cover with a shower cap over night for best results. You can usually find this in lotions and shampoos but they usually don’t contain enough to treat psoriasis properly, so try to use the essential oil.
As you can see, there are many inexpensive and effective treatments that can be done from home, either alone or in combination with medical treatment.
