Raising a family is a full-time job, so adding paid employment on top of that seems nearly impossible. However, some women have found the secret to gaining that elusive work-life balance.

When you’re a parent, there doesn’t seem like there are enough hours in the day and sometimes full-time or even part-time work isn’t really a possibility.

Whatever profession you’re in, media, business or maybe even law, some jobs sometimes don’t match up with your child’s routine, which can make it difficult to spend time with them.

However, there are some handy tips to help you spend some more quality-time with your child and work out a balance that suits you and your job.

Tips to help achieve balance

Know your routine:

Don’t ever underestimate the importance of a good routine. It can help you get everything you want done in a day and also make you prepared if things go awry.

For instance, having a morning routine means that your child can be ready to go to school or childcare on time and you can fit in a few necessary chores or even exercise before you get to work. Night-time routines, on the other hand, can be useful for preparing for the next day ahead, so that you feel less stressed and can get more sleep.

If you don’t work weekends, Sundays can be spent planning out the week ahead. For those mums who work during the weekend, time can be spent on your days off preparing for the days when you have to work and have limited time. This could mean meal-prepping, cleaning or even doing a couple more loads of washing, which can all make a huge difference.

You should also find out what extra-curricular activities your children have throughout the week, if there are any clashes in schedules and align your work diary so that you don’t have any surprises.

Working out a good routine depends entirely on your family and your workload.

Using technology for your benefit:

Nowadays, you can do almost everything online. You can go clothes shopping, pay your bills and even buy groceries with just a click of a button.

Shopping for your groceries online means you can plan out your meals and not get drawn into impulse buying, meaning you’ll save money on buying food items you don’t necessarily need.

Technology can help you and your family’s routine as well. Setting alarms and scheduling the week on your smartphone’s calendar can make life easier. There are also many apps which can help you stay on track with your time management skills and which contain helpful tips for your kids.

Take some time out and seek help when you need it:

Being a parent can often be stressful and it’s of course, time consuming. So, keep in mind that it’s okay to schedule some time out for yourself.

This can let you focus on your mental and physical needs, which will then improve your overall wellbeing and ability as a parent and employee.

It’s also important to remember that it’s okay to ask people for help if you need it. Everyone needs a support system in their lives and this also goes for working mums. This support system can include your partner, relatives, friends or even hired help.

This should help make your life a little easier and allow you to spend a bit more time at work, without the need of feeling guilty.

All in all, being a working mum is tough. It’s all about finding the right balance between work and family, so that you don’t miss out on any of the big moments in life.
