There is nothing like the stress of the holiday season that can rob us of these things. It is supposed to be a time to reflect on God's gift to mankind, Jesus' birth.
It is a time for families to be together. It's a romantic time and a time when we can all become like little children again.
But for women, especially, there is baking, cooking, cleaning, decorating, buying gifts, wrapping gifts, hiding gifts, and trying to find the ones we hid 6 months ago!
There are church plays, school plays, company dinners, family get-togethers...
All crammed into one season and before you know it Christmas morning is here and we are exhausted, stressed, run down, and not very much fun to be around.
But I have found a method of staying organized, getting tasks done on time, and doing it all little by little - spread out over one week. And best of all, you get Saturday and Sunday off!
About six months ago I found myself completely run down. I had tried several ways to keep myself organized: changing Robi every 2 hours, feeding him his snacks and meals on time, cleaning, translating, writing lessons for my students, getting time with the Lord, taking care of myself (drinking 8 glasses of water a day and taking my vitamins), and getting meals on - there was just so much to do that many things fell by the wayside everyday. Important things.
Worst of all was that those things that fell by the wayside often got done on Saturdays and Sundays leaving me no downtime whatsoever.
I felt convicted knowing that God commanded us to have a "sabbath", a day of rest. Now, Sundays are not exactly a day of rest around here, so I decided to make Saturday a day of rest and Sunday a day of holy reflection.
And that's how I came up with my chart system.
On this chart I have listed everything I need to do for that day, from reading my Bible and praying to feeding and changing Robi. From drinking 8 glasses of water a day to my daily chores.
There are extra spaces for each day to write down one-time chores, or to remind myself to do something specific for that day (call the doctor, etc.) Also, there is an "extra" column that I made to write down those things I'd like to do sometime, as a reminder, but that are not necessarily needed to do that particular week.
I have made this a free printable if you'd like to use it. You are free to delete and add whatever you need to make it fit your own personal lifestyle.
I have also found a wicker basket - or any basket for that matter - to be very helpful. Every morning I go around the house picking up things that do not belong it each room, and put them in the basket. Then I sit down and sort through those things, putting them back where they belong. This helps to keep the house picked up, but in a way that is less tiring.
Lastly, I have found lists to be very helpful.
A couple of months ahead of time I sit down and write down the following lists:
Christmas Baking List
Christmas Shopping List
Christmas Budget List
Christmas Decorating List
This way I stay away from randomly baking, which can grow spendy; randomly buying, which can grow very spendy, and randomly decorating, which can be a total waste of time!
