How To Spot Counterfeit Cash At The Store

The 21st century and the dawn of the digital age have brought with them a host of exciting new crimes to worry about, from online identity fraud to the remote hijacking of autonomous vehicles - hopefully we still have a little while until that one becomes too much of a concern!

There will always be somebody out there ready to exploit the security bugs of the ‘real’ world, and their use of technology to modernize the way they do so is testament to the sneaky but innovative nature of the human spirit. Thus it is that even as you take steps to avoid having your credit cards cloned or your bank account hacked, you’re as likely as ever to involuntarily accept cleverly counterfeited money when you receive change from shop vendors, service providers, even your friends and family.

In most cases, hopefully these won’t be the individuals responsible for the crime – but they, like you, probably didn’t think twice about checking their coins and banknotes for signs of authenticity. Unfortunately the buck quite literally needs to stop somewhere, and if you’re the one caught handing over funny money then, at the very least, you can expect to be out of pocket. If the worst comes to the worst, you could wind up having to have a little chat with the cops.

A bit of common or garden vigilance can help you to avoid such scenarios. It’s not too difficult to spot counterfeit cash so long as you remember to check for it when you receive your change. For example, bills will always have a black seal from the Federal Reserve printed on them, while any coin worth checking (those above 5¢) will have riveted edges

There are a few other points to look out for, which is why it’s worth running through this guide to spotting counterfeit money. A few extra moments at the counter could save you a whole lot of expense and embarrassment later on.
