Is The World Less Safe Than It Was When We Were Kids?

As a child in Phoenix Arizona, not one of the safest cities nowadays, I had free range over a 5 by 5 city block area. To my elementary school I walked about a half a mile down the road by myself grades 1st thru 6th. My grandmother or mother walked with me the first part of the school year in 1st grade, before the second half of the year I was walking it by myself. One of them would wait at the end of the yard after school to make sure they saw me, as soon as they had a glimpse of me, they'd go back inside. This changed as the years went on, it was soon, "hurry up you have to get ready for school" and my brother and I would walk it together alone.  There was no waiting for me or seeing me off the older I got. Completely normal I'd say as a child in that day in age.
