LEARNING TO REFOCUS AND MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR LIFE

Although I was glad to see 2012 come, I’m also glad to see it go. This year brought lots of laughter and good times, but never the less brought extreme sadness, stress, and challenges. I’m learning along the way that life is what you make it.

Do you wallow in self pity, feeling defeated or do you find it in your soul to get back up, dust yourself off and say, today will be a better day than yesterday. Sometimes it’s best to take the focus off of yourself and focus on something else. Was there ever a time you were invited to an event, and just wasn’t in the mood to go or participate. So you force yourself to go and be present, only to find that you had a great time, wondering why you made just a big deal out of not going. Or even worse, you know that the holidays are coming and that family member(s) that you’d rather not see or spend time with because of some grudge will be present. Your spirit moves you to love them even when you don’t want to. Why because they are family. Well this may not be the case for all, but some people can find it within themselves to be cordial and show love even when it’s hard.

Tips for changing your focus:

  1. Try something new. (activity, routine)
  2. If you don’t feel like going to the party or event sometimes you need to make yourself go. You will be glad that you went; it can change your whole perspective or your situation.
  3. Have an accountability coach. This can be a friend that you can count on to help motivate you.

By focusing on something else, or by making someone else day, you are training yourself to be selfless, thoughtful, and loving. It really does feel good to do something nice for someone, even if they don’t expect it. This way of thinking takes practice and self awareness. I don’t always get it right. I like my routines and habits. However, I’m in the process of learning to believe that by giving of yourself and time, it always comes back as a blessing 10 times more than what you expect. We are all works in progress and life is about striving to live a little better, healthier, and happier than the previous day.
