Living in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

My family and I were recently transferred to Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Yes, GiTMO!! No, not the prison camps, although they are here on the same side of the island, they are hardly within our view, we can't even see the darn fence line. Honestly, I often forget we share the same island.

So anyway, my husband, Mike, has been here since September of 2009, the kids and I arrived in December, just before Christmas. We have had a fantastic vacation so far. At least it feels like we're on vacation. We have a house with a great view, public beaches, pool, places to eat, buy food and temporary furniture, much like what you would find in a rental property--ok not quite that nice but it's definitely not my stuff.

I have a feeling this move isn't going to set in until my shipment arrives. Today I received a few boxes but there wasn't much in there that made this place any more of a home than it was before they arrived. However, the kids were excited to see their bikes, comforters, towels and pillows again. I'm sure for them that was a real treat. They are also attending school already so I know they already feel the "I'm home" thing I seem to be missing.

Soon I'll start work at the gym and things will hit home once that last shipment arrives, hopefully in the next few weeks.

I think for now I'll continue to take advantage of the stillness in the house. Because I don't have much stuff, I don't have much to do so I play with the toddler, read, study, write, meditate, and reflect on life's little treasures. I am thankful for my friends back in the states for their help during my move, for my friends here in Cuba for their generosity and to my family for being so patient in this time of transition.
