Lyme Disease Part 2: Taking Precaution

Unfortunately, there is no way to really prevent getting Lyme disease and no available vaccine (in the U.S.) but, there are ways to minimize the risk for you and your entire family, especially if your children spend most of their time outdoors.

Some precautions to take include:

  • Wear light-colored clothing to better spot ticks
  • Wear closed-toed shoes, long-sleeved shirts, long pants and a hat.
  • Be sure to tuck in pants legs into socks or into shoes to prevent ticks from crawling up legs.
  • Keep hair pulled back
  • If possible, avoid sitting on the ground
  • Check for ticks on a regular basis
  • Be sure to wash clothes and hair after being in a tick infested area

Lastly, be sure to use an insect repellant containing at least 30% DEET on clothing and exposed skin.
