Interesting article - taken from ehow on making babies happy. When the baby's happy, so will the parents be!

Instructions.Step
1*SMILE & LAUGH* Smile and laugh often! (even fake laughing, head thrown back, shoulders shaking) Babies get a big kick out of it and become overall happier! If you are upset, a baby can sense it and they will have a tendency to mimic you. If you are laughing, they will mimic that.

Step
2*NO!* When your child is doing something they are not supposed to do, instead of loudly shouting "NO!" wag the finger instead. "Ah, ah, ah!" Shake your head and look shocked or surprised to get them to stop. Next time your baby feels defiant they mimic your polite actions and look cute instead of like a brat.

Step
3*DISTRACTION* A wonderful thing! It can help your child forget about being hurt or bored. Point to a toy, object or body part - while they are crying - and say "What is this? My Goodness! Wow!" with a big smile. It is also a good method to get them to give you something they are not supposed to have, like a pencil. Simply trade.

Step
4*DANCE* Dance together to upbeat music. This fun interaction will be a hit for sure. Not only will they have a great load of fun while doing it, they will also get a great workout and it is fun to show other people.

Step
5* SHARING* Most babies HATE sharing and giving things to other people. It is important to train them early. Always, always say "Thank You!" so happy and sweet-like, so that they end up wanting to give things to you. Next time you want them to give you something, hold out your hand and act all happy and say "Thank you." Watch them turn around and give anything to you so they can feed off your positive energy.

Step
6*SLEEP* It does not always work, but the less attention before bedtime means a shorter bedtime process with less tears, meaning a overall happier baby. I usually will softly sing a song while I put my child down and then give them a distraction toy to focus their attention off me.
It is important to peacefully smile the whole time. Then I leave right away. The whole process should not last longer than 5 minutes. If your child cries, but everything is fine (not hungry, wet, hot or cold... etc) then all your baby wants is attention. Bedtime is not the proper time for interaction and attention, it is for sleeping. LEAVE the room, everything is fine. It helps to lower the baby monitor sound while the child cries so you don't go NUTS! It is a hard thing to do at first but the process gets better quickly if your stick to the routine.

Step
7*OUTSIDE* There is something peaceful about being outside. Babies love to look around at nature and explore new environments. It can be a bit boring staring at the same four walls every day. Take your child on a stroller walk and watch them relax and grow content.

Step
8*HUG* Be affectionate and hug your child often. Back rubs, kisses, and hugs will give your child a sense of belonging and security. Make them feel special. You will also benefit from this interaction and become happier parents! Happier parents mean happier babies!
