I was going through some old pictures today and I came across my very first Character Blanket that I made. Gotta Just love Mickey, dont you? I was pregnant with my son and wanted to make a special blanket, so I browsed through the crochet books in a local Michaels craft store and figured this would be perfect. I was so proud of my finished work, that I entered it into the Alameda County Fair.
The only way I could find out what the status was on my entry, was to physically visit the Fair and take a look for myself. Well, needless to say, we were in the middle of a heatwave with temperatures soaring over 100 degrees, I was more than 9 months pregnant and my feet hurt so bad from the extra weight. So, I recruited one of my bestest girlfriends to accompany on my trip to the Fair. After all, I just had to see how I did. I was so proud and sure that I would steal the blue ribbon for First place. So when we got to the Fair, with my feet throbbing, Susie and I got to the exhibition hall as fast as we could. Not sure why, because there was still another few days left of the Fair, and the blanket wasnt going anywhere. Nonetheless, the anticipation of seeing my project come in on top was just too exciting.
We walked around the displays until I finally spotted mine. I said "look, there it is. let's go see! " As we walked up on the showcase, I realized I didnt have the Blue Ribbon after all. My blanket came in 3rd with the white ribbon. But there were other entrys that only got the "honorable mention". A little dissapointed, that I didnt place first, I had the satisfaction of knowing that at least I didnt come in all the way on the bottom. I was in the top 3, and that was good enough for me. So I wobbled on over and stood next to my blanket and had Susie snap a picture. Seriously, looking at this picture, you couldnt tell, but I was realy happy.
My son was born only 2 weeks later. He was my Blue Ribbon; the best project I could have ever made.
