As a vocal breastfeeding advocate, a sex educator and a supporter of survivors of sexual abuse during their childbearing year I have ask myself many times about the validity of “pushing” bf’ing. Yes, breastmilk is best, but if we guilt woman into breastfeeding aren’t we hurting the cause?
And what do I mean by cause? Is it a cause? If we stopped pushing Breast Is Best as if it was a winning hearts and minds military campaign would more women breastfeed?
If breastfeeding is normal and healthy why do we need a campaign? Is shame and guilt really the way to go with this particular issue? My answer would be a resounding NO.
As a defender of a woman’s right to choose and reproductive freedoms (which, to me, includes breastfeeding) shouldn’t I be defending a woman’s right to do what SHE chooses to do with HER breasts?
Questions, questions, always more questions........
