While I’m on the beach topic…I couldn’t help myself.

What in the world is that title about? Hotties?!

No, not a mid-life crisis. Just a thought or more as motherhood and age settle in on this thirty-something-mom of three kids.

A few weeks ago I had a lovely best-friends-date. Yes, two moms, happily strapped with one baby each (all older children left at home.) Lots of pee and poo. Lots of food. Tons of talking. Cooing. And drooling.

We ended up wandering our way down to Ocean Beach, land of the beautiful summer sundress, on this lovely warm day. And it hit me that:

1) We’ve both pretty much grown out of the tie-dye, hippy dress stage. Darn it.
2) Breastfeeding does not ’suck off’ the pounds. Despite hearing that plenty of times from kind, well-intentioned folks.
3) And, we aren’t little hotties anymore. Nope. We’re moms. And darn good ones at that.
2010-07-27 - Tuesday Thoughts - Trees
As we browsed through incense-flowing clothes, I couldn’t help but remember just a handful of years back. I was organizing a conference, back in my office days. And a certain older, outspoken woman from the south approached me on the first evening and said in the sharpest voice I’d heard, “And so, here’s our new little hottie, huh.”

Hottie? Me?! Who does she think she is, calling me a hottie?

Well, little did I know that was a compliment. More or less.

Back to my little afternoon-mommy-date. Well, we were trying on clothes. Kind of. We were mostly lusting over clothes and having mini-identity crises. And in stroll two young women. The essence of youth and beauty intwined. And my mind searches for the word…

Hotties. Yes, two little hotties, looking absolutely stunning in flip flops and Baja Hoodies. Darn them. And for a moment I felt like Evelyn Couch in that parking lot scene in Fried Green Tomatoes (which is a wonderful read, I might add). No, I didn’t bump into them. But, yes, I noted that we are a wee bit older than we were last time we
shopped there.

So, good bye to the hottie days! Cheers to motherhood! And yes, a pat on the back to all of you out there who are also searching for yourselves at this very moment. At least it’s very clear now that I am long-out-of-the hottie stage of life. Whew.
