My Sons and the Search for a New Computer

I was writing a guest post the other day and my computer crapped out on me. As frustrating as it is to have a computer die on you, it's even more frustrating when you were in the middle of something.

It was the middle of the day, so I took the machine to the computer store or Best Buy or some place like that and asked them to at least restore the data I had on the computer so I could back up what I didn't already have backed up. Ultimately, they couldn't do it.

So I started looking for a new computer that night. I scoured the Internet for deals. I read review sites. I woke up and went to the Apple store. I even went to a Microsoft store (gasp! I'm a Mac girl at heart.) I looked at HP, Dell, Asus, Apple, Lenovo, Sony, and Toshiba. Nothing really jumped out at me.

With that said, though, I haven't had a new computer for seven years. I felt like there was definitely something I was missing out on in looking for a new one. Which one would best suit my needs? What am I even looking for? I run my own business, so I need something reliable. I blog regularly, so I need something that is comfortable on these old hands. I've also got two little boys that love their games, so I need something with a little power.

Of all the computers I ran across, though, the one I am most excited about is the Lenovo Z400. I mean just look at that thing! Ridiculous. The things they can do with computers these days. I'm most excited about it because it's got that cool touchscreen. I know they come on everything, but I'm a sucker for new (when I can afford it). Unfortunately, it's not out yet.

My oldest son asked to help me pick one out. I welcomed the input. He got online (on our old desktop) and immediately started reading specs on gaming computers. I put an end to that pretty quickly and gave him a list of computers that were in my price range. I told him he could pick from that list. He was very meticulous about it. He stared at the list for a few minutes before getting back online and checking the specs on the new list. After about 20 minutes, he got up and went over to my youngest son. They looked like little thieves, hunkering down in the corner of the kitchen, whispering to each other and looking in my direction. They then walked back over to the computer and looked at the specs together. More whispering. More looking.

Confused at this point, I made tea and took a nap. When I woke up, they had printed a detailed list of all the computers and written pros and cons for each one. My oldest then said, "Mommy, I think we've made our decision..." He looked very serious. His brother also looked very serious. They folded their arms, looked at each other, then back at me. With a nod, my youngest handed me the specs list for a computer I'd not put on the list, but it was in my price range and seemed to at least work. So, I walked over to the computer and prepared to buy it. But they stopped me first.

"Mom, don't worry about it. It's cheaper on Craig's List."

"What?"

"We found a guy that's selling it brand new on Craig's List for half the price."

"How do you guys know about Craig's List?"

"Everyone uses Craig's List, mom."

"You're seven. And you're five. Let's stay off Craig's List, okay?"

"Okay, but here's the guy's number if you want that computer."

"Thank you, boys. I'm impressed by you both. I love you."

"We love you, mommy."

Kids these days...
