This was the first week we did a unit study based around a book involving fun activities!  It went over really well.  I found a website that based on your child's age or grade level gives you a list of books to read and then a PDF full of learning activities to go along with it.  I like that the activities incorporate many subjects, like math, science, art, vocabulary, etc.
Check it out for yourself here: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/

Owl Babies by Martin Waddell
It's a story about 3 baby owls that wake up in the middle of the night to find their mommy is gone.  After waking, they go through a series of emotions before mommy returns home.

Kiley loved the book and we read it lots of times throughout the week.

Make An Owl Sandwich

I gave Kiley a slice of bread, pieces of cheese, turkey, grapes and let her go to town on it.  I spread some Vegenaise on the bread to help the food stick.  Kiley said she liked it and ate it right up.

Make An Owl Puppet
With some felt, feathers from the craft store, googly eyes and glue, Kiley made a pretty cute owl.  She named him Fuzzy Pants.

Learn About Nocturnal Animals
Nocturnal means awake; active at night.  Discuss different animals that are nocturnal.  Try that night going out in your backyard or for a walk and find some nocturnal animals!
Make An Owl Nest
Take a walk through the park or a wooded area and search for: feathers, twigs, leaves, pine needles, etc.  You can take an old bird house that has a hole in it or if you don't have that use a tall brown paper sack and cut a hole into it. Place your findings and make bedding for your owl nest in your "makeshift tree" from the bird house or bag.
Types Of Owls
Learn about the Barred Owl, Great Horned Owl and the Screeching Owl.  Talk about what kind of food they eat and  listen to each ones unique hoot.  You can listen here at www.owlpages.com.  You can also discuss what raptor, talons and carnivore mean.
Visit homeschoolshare to download the PDF that has owl information, vocab cards, nocturnal animal pictures and much more stuff to go along with your Owl Babies unit study!
