The views of Frank Field – Labour MP on his idea for a parenting GCSE have really interested me.

I don’t as yet have children of high school age, but what I do have are primary children who I make every effort to to bring up so that they know how to perform general life skills, yes age appropriate, but ones I hope to build on as they grow older.

However, if children are not getting this sort of help at home, then surely it’s an obvious choice to place the onus of life skills including parenting education onto schools. But with everything else they have the responsibility to teach and guidelines to meet do they really have the time to teach what should be taught at home?

Have we reached the stage in society where there is no choice but for schools to take on this role in order to reverse the downward spiral of bad parenting and ineffective members of society?

When I was a school which admittedly is 15 – 20 years ago… I was educated in basic life skills during home economics classes, this topic covered household budgeting, meal planning, frugal use of food resources, how to change a plug, how to brew tea, how to iron different items of clothing, how to use a washing machine and understand washing labels, how to sew and how to look after a baby – fold nappies, basic equipment needed etc. However, these skills were also picked up at home as when I was a child most mothers of the children I knew stayed at home in a housewife capacity.
