professional blogs - how do you get attention and the "right" kind of traffic?

I took it upon myself to start a blog to keep my husband's company name fresh in search engines -
but I am not sure how to get the "right" people looking at it.
who are the right people? people who know what the product is and have contacts - my networking is amongst women and mostly moms and a lot of artists and crafters - he needs computer geeks, specifically SAP geeks, paying attention...
anybody know?

I like the surveys and questions ideas. I'm a store manager for a large department store and you get a lot of useful information from surveys. You need to know your customers needs and concerns. Another good way of doing this is to read other related forums and blogs. Go to technorati.com and type in the type of service your husband is in and see what blogs pop up. Read their blogs and you'll get a good idea of what related sites are doing.

What are some ways to gather marketing info on demographics and habits of your husband's company's customers? Can you do surveys on the blog or website? Can you come up with an online survey that customers can fill out after they make a purchase - sort of like how Home Depot or Target does on their receipts. The more you know about the company's customers and their likes/dislikes and online habits, the more accurate you'll be in knowing what terms they use to find the blog and company.

You can also "reverse engineer" it but determining what kind of people we want to attract - geeks, SAP users, SAP developers, software engineers, etc. and thinking about what search terms they'd use. Then you'd write content based on those search words.

Also, do you have Google Analytics on the blog? That's a good way of determining how people are finding it through searches. Also, use Quantcast.com to find demographics on your current readership.

Maybe do a twitter search for some of those topics, and then follow the people it brings up, it will direct them to your blog. Also, look into joining some forums dealing with that topic and list your blog in your signature. Other than that, I agree to have some business cards printed up, and when you find yourself surrounded by the type of people you are trying to attract, take advantage of it and pass them out.

Good question. I listed my blog on my business card and have been using entrecard, searching for folks in similar fields or interests. I just started but it seems as though there are more folks looking at it.
