A little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes sat patiently behind his mother in his booster seat as she started the car.
The little boy said absolutely nothing as his mother turned around to look at him. His mother met his crinkled up smiling eyes with her own and said,” is your seat belt done up?”
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes said,” yes my seat belt made a big loud click didn’t you hear it?”
The little boy’s mother said,” Do you have anything you want to tell me before I start driving the car.”
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wriggles in his toes said,” Nope I am good.”
The little boy’s smiling mother said,” alright then, off to Nana and Papas house we go.
The little boy’s mother started the cars motor with a twist of the key and a vroom and a humming sound.
The van backed out of the drive way of their house and on to the road with the crunching of gravel at the end of the drive way.
Now asking if someone had anything to say before starting a car may seem a little bit unusual.
To anyone who was unfamiliar with certain children maybe even a little bit strange.
Some children know many interesting facts about anything and everything.
This little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes was just such a child.
Just as his mother was really relaxing and enjoying the music in her minivan and just as she began to sing along to her favourite song there was a thump, thump, thump to the back of her seat.
The little boy who will remain unnamed to protect his identity did this on regular occasions because he found it far too difficult to wait until the van had parked to tell his mother anything that randomly was crossing his mind.
His mother took one deep calming breath in and turned down the music.
She then put her very patient nice mommy voice on and said,” please do not kick mommies’ seat.”
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes said,” Sorry mom, I just have something very, very, important to tell you. “
The little boy who will remain unnamed did this same thing every single day.
So his mother who is very, very, smart and very, very, patient left that radio off and said,”yes honey what is it that you need to tell me. “
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes smiled a great big smile because he knew something so important that it needed to be shared immediately.
His mother said,” okay, I`m waiting to hear your important thing so tell me quickly.”
The little boy took a very deep breath because he had a lot to say and it was very important news to be told indeed.
``Do you know about toads? “said the little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes. He paused and waited for his mothers reply to his extremely important question.
“I know not nearly enough about toads please tell me what you know,” the little boy’s mother said with a very patient smile awaiting her child’s usually more than entertaining answer.
“Toads eat other small frogs and rodents,” the little boy said with a giant freckle and fact filled grin.
“Oh really well that is a very interesting fact that I did not know,” the little boy’s mother said and then waited for there to be more facts to follow.
The little boy’s mother was really a very smart lady because as soon as her hand moved just one inch towards the volume control on the radio.
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes said I know one more thing about toads.
The little boy’s mother smiled a great big smile and said,” Well then you better tell me because you can never know too much about toads.”
The little boy smiled his biggest smile and said, “Toads are amphibians, and that means that they can live on land and in the water too.”
“Really, now that an amazing fact that I did not know, thank you for telling me,” the little boy’s mother said with a big smile because she really had known that fact yet pretended that she did not know.
“Is there any other facts about toads before I turn the radio on, “the little boy’s mother asked sweetly.
“Actually toads do not have teeth, so they cannot chew their food, “the little boy said while smiling a smile his mother knew all too well.
Then the little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes added, “A toad swallows its meal whole mom, when it’s still alive.
His mother answered with just one word she said, “Gross”.
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes smiled and said, “Yes it is.”
They drove in silence for just one moment before the little boy gave his mother seat a couple kicks because he was bored and because it was fun.
“Do not kick my seat while I’m driving a driver needs to concentrate on the road while driving. “His mother said in a very stern tone.
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes not because he really had anything else to say but then he remembered one more thing that his mother really needed to know.” Some toads make a really bad taste come out of their skin when they are scared so the animal that wants to eat them will spit them right out. “
“That is really very interesting but its quiet driving time now for just a minute,” the little boy’s mother said with a deep calming breath.
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes scrunched up his whole face so he looked like he just ate a lemon because he had a lot more to say now and he was finding it very hard to hold it all inside of himself.
He tried looking out the window but that didn’t work he tried untying and then retying his shoe laces but that just made him even more frustrated because he couldn’t do them back up.
He tried taking his shoes right off and putting them on the seat beside him and that didn’t work.
Then he had a brilliant idea he tied his shoe laces in knots and then tied them together.
He tied them ten times and then picked up one and because they were tied together they could be used like nun chucks.
He was a ninja for just one minute and accidentally hit the back of his mothers shoulder with one shoe that was tied to another shoe.
“His mother turned the radio off and said, “Did you seriously just hit me with your shoe?”
“Sorry I was being a ninja and I accidentally hit you with my nun chucks. “The little boy immediately apologised not meaning to hit his mother.
The little boy’s mother pulled over the van immediately and turned around in her seat she looked very frustrated as she said, “Of course you untied your shoes and took them off to make them into nun chucks, you hit me in the back while I was driving do you want to get into a car accident?”
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes thought of something all of a sudden and said, “Do you think Brussels sprouts make a bad taste because they don’t want you to eat them.”
The little boy’s mother smiled shook her head and started to giggle to herself and she replied,”No the doctor wants you to eat them because they are green and green food helps us to be healthy.
“I’m not sure I believe that,” the little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes answered.
“Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you believe that something is the truth, some things just are,” the little boy’s mother stated.
The car was silent for a moment and then the little boy’s mother said is that all you had to say
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes said,” yup it is all I needed to say.”
The little boy’s mother was just about to pull out and thought that she had better double check.
“ So are you sure there is nothing else that you need to tell me,” his mother said knowing that there always was and feeling a little afraid of being hit accidentally by another shoe.
“Nope all done,” the little boy said with a grin that was so enormous his mother could see it in the rear view mirror and it made her smile even bigger.
“Okay,” his mom said and turned on her music and just as she began to sing her very first note.
There was a kick, kick, kick on the back of her seat.
Her little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes did have one more thing to say and his very patient mother turned down the music and said in her most patient voice once again,” please do not kick the seats.”
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wriggles in his toes looked very frustrated and his eyes were very, very wide and he said in a very frustrated sounding tone,” but I have something very, very important to tell you. “
The little boy’s mother took a big deep breath and said in her sweetest most patient mother voice,” yes dear, what is it that you need to say to me now?”
“Toads are not that big here, but in Australia there is a toad that is the size of a football. “The little boy said very proud of himself.
The little boys mothers eyes got big and she said,” That’s a big toad.”
“Yes it is,” the little boy said and looked out of the window smiling because he knew this time that he had told his mother something that she obviously did not already know.
They drove for a while in silence before the little boy remembered something else that he was sure that his mother did not know.
“Mom can I tell you something else that’s really, really cool, “the little boy asked from the back seat very politely.”
“Why not,” his mother said with a smiling face because she had given up on relaxing and listening to music completely by this point in the drive.
It very important, it’s so important I will bet you already know because old people usually know lots of important things.
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes jumped around in his seat very excited to tell his mother the really important thing he had been holding inside of himself for a whole two minutes.
His mother on the other hand heard him say old people and said,” Surely you wouldn’t be calling your mother an old person.”
“You’re just way older than I am, a lot older but you are the prettiest mom that I know, “the little boy said smiling a charming smile which did not work one little bit on his mother.
It was the little boy’s mother who crinkled her brow now because she did not like to think about getting older at all.
“Just so you know it’s very bad manners to call anyone old, for any reason, even if it’s your mother,” his mother said.
“Sorry,” the little boy said with a bit of a frown because he did not mean to say anything bad.
“It’s alright but how about we consider that one of the bad words that you’re not allowed to use, “His mother said with a smile that softened up her crinkled brow.
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes squirmed around in his seat because he still had something very, very important to tell his mother.
“What do you need to tell me now,” the little boy’s mother said with tired eyes.
“Do you know about sharks?”He asked with a big smile as he tried to untie his shoe laces from each other.
“Please tell me about sharks his mother said with a great big smile because he hadn’t talked about sharks in a while but last year he had talked about sharks almost every single day.
“When a shark swims by you and bumps into you they are really tasting you right through their skin so they can decide whether or not you would be good to eat.” The little boy said with a smile.
“Do you remember who told you that fact about sharks,” the little boy’s mother said because she remembered exactly who had told them that fact.
“Who told me,” the little boy said feeling as though he had always known.
“It was a lady working at the aquarium. Do you remember now?”The little boy’s mom said with a grin.
They were almost there and the little boys mom asked if he needed to go to the bathroom because he was squirming around in his seat.
The little boy said, “Nope I’m just thinking about snakes so I thought that I would be one for a second.
“Did you know about snakes?” the little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes asked his mother.
“I know some things about snakes, “the little boy’s mother said with a smile on her face thinking about how cute he was as he squirmed like a snake in his seat.
“Some snakes make themselves smell and taste bad when they are scared too, just like some toads do,” he said casually while he looked out of the window at the large trees that they were driving past.
“That is a very interesting fact,” the little boy’s mom said with a smile as she concentrated on driving the van.
The little boy smiled and said, “Do you like snakes mom?”
“I’m not a really big fan of snakes honey but I like those more than I like spiders,” the little boy’s mom said casually as she drove down the highway.
The little boy said,”Well maybe if you knew lots about spider’s maybe they wouldn’t scare you as much.”
“Okay, tell me what you know about spiders then,”the little boy’s mother said smiling as she concentrated on her driving.
It was raining now and there was traffic and she was really trying to pay close attention to the road.
“Well The largest spider ever was over 8 feet long and weighed over 500 pounds.” The little boy said grinning.
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes watched his mother scrunch up her face as he spoke.
The little boy grinned and added “It couldn’t walk though; so it couldn’t catch you because it broke its own legs because it was too big.”
The little boy’s mom said, “Let’s not talk about spiders and snakes anymore.
I do not really like them and honestly they kind of freak me out.
Once again the little boy’s mother noticed him squirming around in his seat and said,” That’s it I’m pulling over so you can go pee.”
“You probably should pull over,”the little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes said as he squirmed around in his seat.”
The little boy’s mother pulled the van over and said,” Just one second.”
She hopped out and ran around the van to open the side sliding door to let him out.
“Okay let’s go pee and you better hurry you look like you’re going to have an accident. “The little boy’s mother said as she stood by the side of the van watching her son squirm around like he was covered in fleas.
“But I don’t need to go pee,” the little boy said as he wiggled and squirmed and giggled.
“Of course you do look at you can barely control yourself, “his mother leaned over his seat to undo his seat belt.
“They are tickling me,” he said as he giggled and squirmed in his seat.
“What’s tickling you? Now you listen to me young man no more of these shenanigans, his mother said sternly as she fumbled with his seat belt.
“If you pee in the car I’m going to be really upset, just hold still so I can undo your seat belt,” the little boy’s mother said as he squiggled and squirmed around.
“I don’t have to go pee they are just tickling me, “the little boy said followed by a fit of giggles.
All of a sudden a look passed over the little boy with freckles on his nose and lots, and lots of extra wiggles in his toes mothers face and she said,” What exactly is tickling you?”
I had them in a bucket outside and then I put them in my pockets because I didn’t think that you would let me bring the bucket, the little boy said as he wiggled, and jiggled, and hysterically giggled.
The little boy’s mother froze in place with fear like a statue and she got the shivers.
The little boy’s mother knew that she did really not want to know the answer to the question that she was about to ask her son.
The little boy’s mother said, “What was in the bucket?”
“Promise you won’t get mad at me, “ the little boy said trying to be serious through fits of giggles as he shook out his pant legs and looked under his shirt.
Then he suddenly stopped laughing and said,” that’s better I got them out.”
The little boy bent over and dumped out his overnight bag in the grass outside of the van and out fell a couple brown garden snakes.
His mother stopped herself from letting out a small squeal and took a deep calming breath.
“Was there just the two of them?” his mother said as she got shivers again and just a little scared to hear the answer to her question.
“Yes just two of them,” he said with a sad face as the snakes disappeared into the grass.
His mother knew that something had been tickling him and if both snakes were there, what had been in his shirt making him giggle?”
I would have been able to show Papa my new pets if they hadn’t started tickling me you never would have known,” the little boy with freckles on his nose and far less wiggles in his toes than he had just five minutes earlier.
“I put them in my pocket and they just would not stay put and behave, “the little boy groaned.
“Tell mommy what was in your pocket right now,” the little boy’s mother said in a stern tone.
“I just wanted to show my papa,”the little boy said with a pout.
“Tell me right now,” his mother repeated as she scrunched up her own face awaiting the answer.
“Spiders, the little boy said in his most quiet voice.”
The little boy with freckles on his nose and wiggles in his toes, watched as his mother squealed, and screamed and ran around in circles by the side of the road.
Now that they were stopped by the side of the road, and there was plenty of time to talk all he did was shake his head slowly from side to side and say............girls.
