Reconnecting with Your Kids through Cartoons

Allow me to introduce Mom. Life. Love.'s first guest blogger, and my good friend, Crooked Marc. Crooked Marc is a fashion guru and owns CrookedMarc.me, a men's fashion and lifestyle blog. I am pleased to have him, and I hope you look forward to many more posts by him in the future!

I know. You've out grown cartoons. That's kid stuff. But I have news for you, the modern cartoons that your kids love are awesome!

Gone are the days of the slap stick comedic stylings of Sir Bugs Bunny and his Merrie Melodies crew. Animation has evolved light years since we were awed by the explosions in GI, the ecto blasters of Ghostbusters or the pizza pies of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The lines are crisp, the dialogue is slick and the colors are HD.  It's the themes, however, that make the real difference.

Our children live in much more complex times. They are often times asked to grow up faster than we ever were. They are faced with complex things that they aren't able to discuss with parents. That's where the current crop of cartoons come in. They tackle social issues in a way that kids can grasp while still maintaining their comedic innocence. Shows such as Cartoon Network's Adventure Time and The Regular Show regularly deal with interpersonal relationships, romance and even tough topics like bullies. They are both shows filled with both giggles and nuggets of knowledge. And they are shows that you can sit down and watch with your kids.

Much like your favorite sit-com, modern cartoons create an entire environment filled with characters and locations. You will find yourself invested in these animated wonders, wondering what their next misadventure holds for them. You find yourself watching along with your kids, answering their questions about the jokes that written specifically for you, the parent. Yes, they tell adult jokes. But they are so subtle and innocent, only you will notice. These things are by design. Modern cartoon writers are trying to reunite parents with their children through a more intelligent, mature comedy.

So I say to all the parents out there, instead of dropping your kids off in front of the TV after school, grab some popcorn and make a pit stop. My TV stays locked on Cartoon Network because I think they produce some of the best cartoons on television. A daily watching session with your kids will not only create some bonding time, but will also give you a chance to monitor the programs they are watching. Who knows, you may even find something you'd want to watch in your free time.
