Blue Ridge Roller Girls, Oatmeal Cream Pies, and a GIVEAWAY Winner.

What was your favorite childhood treat? Swiss Cake Rolls, Twinkies, Ding Dongs? I was a Oatmeal Cream Pie kind of girl.

How long has it been since you had one??? Sadly, they may not be quite what you remembered. Maybe we've matured beyond heavily preserved, factory processed baked goods.

Nostalgia isn't quite what it used to be. ~Peter De Vries

Speaking of nostalgic things, a couple weeks ago,
some of my "posse" met up for a girl's night out. We decided it would be
great fun to go to the roller derby!

I'm in the stripes.
You may remember (if you are, ahem, my age or older) the crazy roller girl bouts televised in the seventies....anyone??? Well let me say with some authority, like the packaged lunchbox treats mentioned above, things are not what they used to be.

THIS IS WAY BETTER!

Behold, the revival of this showy, turbulent, contact sport involving baby-doll/punk costumes uniforms, speed skates, and jeering fans! The teams battle on a roller
rink, scoring points by slinging their "jammers" to the head of the
pack, past the opposing team's blockers. A whizzing onslaught of
grabbing, shoving, swearing, and occasionally blood. It is NOT for the
faint of heart!

To top it all, the skaters names are FANTASTIC! You find yourself screaming for Poison Sue Smac, Ca-slamity Jane, Grafik Illuskater, and
Mazel Tov Cocktail.

The brawl we witnessed faced the Blue Ridge Roller Girls against The Atlanta Rumble Bees. I'm proud to tell you the home-team, BR Roller Girls, SMOKED the Rumble Bees with a final score of 163-103!!! WHOO-HOO! Seriously, If
you have not experienced this, it's worth going at least once!

My apologies, I couldn't resist adding this photo!

Alright, back to the nostalgic snack-cakes...

My hubby and I have recently discussed a new house rule for guarding our waistlines. "If you MUST have it, you must MAKE it from scratch!" This rules out feverishly grabbing ice cream bars, store-bought oatmeal cream pies,
and any other junk that you only crave at 11:46 pm--the worst possible
time to eat it! And who in there right mind is going to start baking at
11:46? Not me! But if my craving continues the next day, I will make it myself and delight my family.

So here's to nostalgic treats, to making it yourself, AND to roller derby!
Not so much to waistlines!
