I should be finishing Christmas cards...the Channel 2 Newsman warned me if I don't get them out this week they won't arrive before Christmas! But what do they know?

I need a moment to relax, this month has been crazy visiting people and eating mass amounts of food. It's hard work shoving your face with every delightful goody put before you while carrying on intriguing conversations. Well ok, so not all of them are super intriguing, for which I have only myself to blame.
Last night we went to a Christmas party were we were all standing around mingling and eating (I was mainly eating) and I realized very quickly that I lack some basic social skills. People kept talking to me but I'm just horrible at asking insightful questions to keep the conversation going. Maybe it's because I'm more interested in pouring soy sauce over my sushi than talking but for some reason I fail to come up with much else to say other than impressive one liners like "uh-huh" or "oh ya, I know".

I remember reading that a conversation is like playing tennis, you have to hit the ball back and forth if you want to play. I do try to hit that ball back but it usually ends up hitting the fence and then slowly rolling out of bounds. After so many failed attempts the conversation dies and there's an awkward pause as we both think of a way to gracefully move on.
This is where you'd think kids would come to the rescue because what greater skill does a four year old possess than interrupting adult conversations? But no, they seem to be rather content while I suffer through yet another lame match of tennis. What can I say? It's hard being socially awkward during the holiday season! ;)
