It is so important that we pay attention to who is watching us. To think our actions have no consequences would be absolutely wrong. When I was younger, my siblings and I would stay occupied by playing outside sports. Football was my favorite! I even played powder puff football in high school! I just knew I was going to have a son who wanted to play football!

Well, when I had my son, I dressed him in football gear, bought him a football and even had one of those bounce back bubble dummies where he could throw the football into the hands then tackle the player. I was in heaven with the thought of him playing when he was older. When he got to the age of playing sports we signed him up for every sport he was able to play.

Now, he is at the age where he can decide what sport he wants to play. It just so happen that he is very interested in basketball! At first, I thought “how could this be? I thought for sure he was going to want to play football?” Then, I figured it out! My husband played football, ran track, and played basketball in high school. Eventually, he decided to solely play basketball and continue the sport through college. Now, he is working at a high school as a 9th grade basketball coach.

Sometimes, my son goes to the practices and also plays basketball with his daddy at home. At times I would go watch them play and it was such a beautiful thing to see my son doing everything just like daddy. Most of the time my husband doesn’t even realize that our son is on the court with him because he is so focused on coaching. That’s when I realized that it is so important for us as parents to always be on our best behavior because whether we know it or not our children watch us. They learn from what they see us do. Even when we fight and think they can’t hear us, they may seem like they are not paying attention, but they know!

I asked my son why he wanted to play basketball and not football; his exact words were “because I have to drink my milk so I can get tall like daddy and play like daddy.”
They see us, they hear us, and they want to be like us! Let’s be examples and lead our children in the way they should go! We as parents see a lot, but we don’t always see when our children are watching us. ;)
