T2TT: Coat Closet
Time: 50 minutes
It is finally starting to feel like fall around here. So I know that the cold weather and winter is not far behind. And when I went to grab a jacket out of our coat closet one chilly evening, my next Task to Tackle became evident. Our coat closet had become a catch all for many things other than coats. And forget trying to grab anything off the shelves without 4 other things falling on your head.
I began by removing everything from the closet and sorting it into appropriate piles (coats, hats, gloves, etc). Anything that made sense to store someplace else I moved since we have limited space and have recently added another coat wearing body to the family. So things like our travel dog crate and my husband's large winter work boots found new homes. I also pitched things like the bag of bags (as in paper shopping bags like the ones from Victoria's Secret) that were hiding on the top shelf from our move (three years ago). I also discovered a fun 6 piece flashlight set I had received in a white elephant gift exchange one year that really would have come in handy during our 6 day power outage this summer. Oh well, c'est la vie!
I began reloading the closet by adding additional storage for hats and gloves. Now my husband and I each have our own bin on the shelf above the coats. When loading the coats back in, I took care to make sure they were buttoned or zipped and hanging properly to take up less space. I removed any "coats" that weren't actually coats like hooded sweatshirts, sweater coats or suit jackets. Since these can be stored in our regular closet I didn't want them taking up space in the coat closet. I designated the left side of the closet for my husband and the right side for me. And yes, I did label it with my label maker :) With what I was able to purge and reassign, I gained an entire shelf of space (above where the hats and gloves are stored) plus floor space where I can eventually add small bins for Q's hats and gloves.
