As much as I loathe winter weather, there truly is something magical about the first snow of the season.  Those white flakes falling gracefully from the sky always bring an unexpected peacefulness in my otherwise chaotic world.  And being able to share that special moment with my kids makes it all that more memorable for me.

We got our first snowy dusting just this week on Monday evening.  I had finally gotten the kids tucked away in their beds (for the bazillionth time that night), and I was enjoying a much-needed glass of Rodney Strong.  My husband was out of town for a business trip, and I was happy to be watching my Real Housewives without interruption (or so I thought).

It was just about the time I put my feet up that I heard little footsteps on the staircase and an all-too-familiar whine about not being able to go to sleep.  Irritated, I swiftly walked my resistant daughter back up to her room and into bed.  The child was so overly exhausted, however, that she'd worked herself into a complete fit of tears.  No amount of soothing or singing on my part seemed to relax her.  But I soon discovered the very thing that would put her mind at ease.

Out of the corner of my eye, I happened to notice that snow was falling in beautiful crystals outside the window.  Considering how much my kids absolutely LOVE snow, I knew this was the solution to my problem.  So I told my grumpy girl to follow me to the window and open the blinds.  Immediately, her frown turned into a giant smile as her teary eyes lit up with excitement.  We sat there and watched in wonder at the snow hitting the rooftop for several long minutes before I tucked her back into bed with a grin on her tired face.

Not wanting my son to miss out on all the fun, I then snuck into his room to share the news with him.  And naturally, my little night owl was still wide awake as I led him over to the window for the big surprise.  He was so happy to see the flakes, in fact, that he insisted on touching them.  So we opened his window and scooped some onto our fingertips.  My heart flip-flopped as I watched him giggle at the feel of the wetness on his skin.  I absolutely loved sharing that excitement with him as we stared up at the sky together.  After a while, he, too, crawled into bed with a huge, happy smile for the night.

Sitting there basking in the glory of the snow with my two favorite little people on this planet was just one of the many precious moments that help make all the woes of parenting worthwhile.  I know in my heart of hearts that these times are numbered as my kids insist on growing up on me.  So I've been trying my best to REALLY appreciate the little things in life with them as much as I possibly can lately.  And while I'm sure that nighttime memory of watching the first snowfall of the season will soon be forgotten by my kids, it will stay with me for a long time coming.
