What can you expect from Botox?

Botox injections are a kind of medication that use a type of botulinum toxin for paralyzing muscle activity for a specific time period. This toxin is obtained from a microbe which could lead to botulism. The reason why Botox is, nevertheless, popular is due to its ability to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles.

Besides its widely popular cosmetic purpose, Botox injections are used for the treatment of excessive sweating, repetitive neck spasms, overactive bladder and lazy eye. It has also proven successful in treating chronic migraines.

Botox is the first drug which uses the botulinum toxin for treatment of various conditions. If you go for your Botox treatment, it is important to let your doctor know if you have had Botox in the last 4 months. Your doctor must also know if you are taking sleeping aid, any medication for allergies or muscle relaxant. If you take blood thinners, you will have to stop taking them for a while before your Botox procedure since it could increase any cases of bleeding and bruising.

Most people remain comfortable during their Botox procedure but the doctor may recommend numbing the area before your treatment. He may use ice, topical or vibration anesthesia to numb the treatment area.

What is the procedure like?

A thin needle is used to inject small levels of the botulinum toxin into the skin or the muscle. The injections depend on various factors including the area which is to be treated. It is a simple 10 minute procedure and you can get the treatment in the doctor’s office itself.

After procedure care

There is no downtime involved with a Botox treatment and you can go back to your daily activities right after it. You must be careful, however, not to rub or massage the treated area. This is important since massaging or rubbing might lead to migration of the toxin to another area which was not targeted.

Botox takes a few days to begin working. Depending on the problem to be treated, the effects of Botox can last for about 3 months or longer. In order to maintain your results, you must keep up your scheduled touch up treatments.

Botox treatment is safe and gives you the desired results as long as you ensure getting it from a well experienced doctor.
