Why I am a Work-at-Home Mom and Blogger

This recent article on Babble Mom Crunch was most refreshing — and provided a jolly good laugh — for a work-at-home blogging mom like me. Why refreshing? Well, it’s been a beautiful albeit hard-to-define line of work! A lot of people ask me what I do for a living. Somehow, it’s been tricky to define what I do exactly, especially since a lot of people don’t get how blogging or writing for Facebook or Twitter and other social media constitutes a real job.

To tell you the truth, I’m still determining exactly what it is I do, because I do so many things.

What I do know is that all of these things — helping other women set up their blogs; providing copy to PR company clients; partnering with mompreneurs and women-owned businesses on the blog — have to do with writing. Because writing, I’ve confirmed, is my niche as a work at home mom mom. And somehow, this blog has helped me reaffirm my mission as a work-at-home mom, which is something I’ve always wanted to be ever since I found out I was going to be a mom.

Simply put: Blogging has helped me become a full-fledged work-at-home mom.

How this blog helps me be a work-at-home mom

I already know why I run this blog:

  1. I love this little blog and consider it a blessing to write it;
  2. It acts as the “storefront” to my freelance writing services.

Dainty Mom helps me serve my purpose as a work-at-home mom. I update the blog every week with new content that shows my writing style and the things I enjoy writing about. And then, I have a little portion up there on the navbar that says “Work with Me.” When you click on that link, I give you a rundown of exactly what I do as a freelance writer, blogger and editor — and recently — small business and mom blog consultant. (Yes, I’ve made being a “mom blog consultant” into a job — can you imagine? More on that in a future post.)

So, this blog helps me to write about my work-at-home life; feature inspiring moms who are rocking the mompreneur or work-at-home lifestyle; partner with like-minded mom business owners and promote them on social media. It’s my hope that people who read my blog will find themselves in need of these services. I hope every day that people who read what I write about will say, “Hey, she’s pretty good at this. I wonder if she can help me out, too?”

I run this blog because it’s what I’m passionate about.

If you’re one of the women who regularly reads this blog, you would understand by now that writing is my main talent: It is something that I am passionate about, a marketable skill that I have utilized to generate an income.

But more than providing me with work, this blog is something I lie awake about at night, when my mind reels with ideas on how to make the blog better for other moms. It’s more than a little playground online for me. My blog is a business card, my writing portfolio — and also, my journal — rolled into one. It’s like my life at home, transformed into writing, and published for the world to read. (At least it’s my dream that one day this little blog will reach the world!)

This blog — however small it is — is something I’m destining for mom blogger greatness, income greatness. And I’m not shy about admitting this.

I’ve always believed that doing what you’re most passionate about is what will make you happy. When you do what you’re passionate about — like running a biz, baking, designing kids clothes or accessories, curating eco-friendly finds for babies, or whatever — you’ll really only be satisfied by what you’re doing if you are fulfilling your purpose.

So, that’s why I’m a work-at-home mom blogger. After I post this entry, I’ll set to work on blog strategy for another client, write for another mompreneur’s business blog, talk on the phone with a mom who wants to start a blog, or answer some emails from other mom-owned businesses who’d like to partner with Dainty Mom. Of course, I also take care of my little family.

I may not be a dooce or a Pioneer Woman or a Simple Mom — but I promise you I’ll work hard to be the best me I can be, for my family and for this blog. Because this is what makes me happy, what keeps me waking up hopeful each day. And I thank God, truly, that I get to do this every day.
