My plan is to only change for the seasons. . . although recently I've changed something weekly or so, but that's just because I've been trying some new layout features.
I change my furniture monthly, so I pretty much change my blog about the same way. Additions, subtractions, new look, etc., it's who and how I work..... LOL
I've been moving the furniture so much I'm burnt out of it. Three platforms, three designs, two URLs since June. I'm tired! And I bet my readers are, too.
Web readers, I've found, generally aren't fond of suprises. Think of how many folks freaked out a few months back when Facebook changed its navigation. And I'm not nearly as essential to people's lives as Facebook is.
So I'm staying put for a while. I might tweak banner art for seasons and I'll definitely add more content, but as far as the basic color scheme and mechanics about how people get around the site, I'm finished. For at least a year. :)
I recently updated the graphics on mine, it's the same color scheme as before, but (I think) the header and the background look better :). It took me a while to put them together, so I'll probably leave it as is for a while, but maybe I'll try doing some seasonal updates at some point.
I just did a massive redo of my blog and I absolutely love it. I can't explain it, but when I see it, it makes me want to post. This, I guess, is a good thing--sort of like sitting in a new chair, or wrapping yourself in a nice warm new throw... It took so much to make it happen, though, that I just can't see myself changing it again any time soon. I'm new to blogging, but I think I'd like to think of it in terms of magazines... they don't redesign over and over again, beause they want to build their audience and get thier audience used to their product. If they changed it constantly, people wouldn't necessarily be loyal, because they're looking for what they're used to and know. Is this the way blogging works? Because of course, like with everything when it comes to digital media, it may be completely different from traditional media.
Trying to find a good theme hasn't been easy, so I've had a couple of template changes. I really like the one I have no, other than that it would have been nice to have a custom header too! Maybe that is fixable, I don't know how though. I don't think it's good to change too often though, it confuses me as a reader!
